Advanced Optics Engineer (Optical Designer)
Job Description
As an Advanced Optical Engineer at Honeywell, you will play a critical role on a cross‑disciplinary team that specializes in the design, development, and manufacturing of novel, state‑of‑the‑art optical and science instruments for military, government, and commercial space applications, including Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, space situational awareness, maritime traffic monitoring, and optical communications. Your expertise and knowledge will be instrumental in developing optical systems and performing testing to ensure successful completion of projects and the delivery of high‑quality solutions.
In this role, you will collaborate with a team to execute project plans related to optical systems and test systems, ensuring all engineering requirements are fulfilled. You will provide technical assistance to fellow engineers, troubleshoot issues, and lead or contribute to the development of innovative solutions for complex customer challenges. This position requires a blend of hands‑on, in‑person laboratory work and activities outside the lab, including conceptual discussions and model‑based analysis, to support team members and complete your own independent tasks.
You will report directly to one of our Sr Engineering Managers and will work out of our Cambridge location in Canada.

- Provide comprehensive technical support and guidance to engineering teams in the development and testing of optical systems and test setups, including hands‑on laboratory work and collaborative support outside the lab.
- Contribute to the development and execution of project plans related to the building and testing of optical hardware including telescopes, fiber assemblies, and laser systems.
- Design, assemble and operate optical test setups using various tools such as interferometers, integrating spheres, spectrometers, optical sensors, and light sources (lasers, lamps) across different wavelengths.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex engineering problems related to the manufacturing and testing of optical systems.
- Develop build and test documentation throughout all project phases, including planning, design, execution, and post‑execution analysis.
- Ensure adherence to quality and safety standards and customer requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering processes and efficiency.
