Job description

The City of Beaumont is the fastest growing municipality in the Edmonton Region! Located at the southern boundary of Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton, and 15 kilometers east of the Edmonton International Airport, Beaumont is home to nearly 25,000 people. Beaumont’s growth trajectory and strategic location present a variety of rewarding professional challenges and opportunities to apply forward-thinking planning concepts to shape the growth and development of the community.

The Planning and Development Team is responsible for stewarding this incredible growth through our development planning, city and regional planning, and safety codes service areas. Our team is highly collaborative, dynamic, fun, and talented. We strive to be problem solvers, community builders, and relentlessly curious professionals, guided by both technical rigor and strong sense of purpose. Beaumont is seeking multiple planning professionals to join our Planning and Development Team! We have up to two permanent, full-time Planner II positions and one Planner II position on a 24-month term.

Starting in 2026, Beaumont’s Planning & Development Department will undertake several transformative projects that will shape the future of our growing city. From updating the Municipal Development Plan to refining the Transportation Master Plan, finalizing the Comprehensive Growth Plan, working with our neighboring municipalities on regional planning, and enhancing the Land Use Bylaw, these initiatives will strengthen the framework that guides Beaumont’s growth. In addition, Beaumont is also updating our processes and procedures to respond to the changes in our framework and streamline service delivery, including implementing an electronic permitting system.

As a Planner II, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to projects that redefine the suburban experience and help ensure that Beaumont continues to grow as a vibrant, livable, and spirited community.

What YOU’RE Responsible for

  • Managing and reviewing Land Development Applications, including area structure plans, Outline Plans, subdivisions, redistricting, and statutory plan amendments
  • Managing the negotiation, entering into and life cycle processing of development agreements for land development applications.
  • Undertaking public education and engagement efforts related to community growth and development and balancing diverse perspectives with sound professional judgment.
  • Ensuring alignment with the requirements set out in the Municipal Government Act, Beaumont’s Land Use Bylaw, and other legislation, statutory plans, policies, and service standards.
  • Monitoring and analyzing data related to best practices, industry trends, legislation changes, and performance metrics and indicators.
  • Creating and nurturing the conditions that supports growth and innovation while enhancing what makes Beaumont a great place to live and invest in.
  • Preparing and delivering professional planning reports, recommendations, and presentations to Council, committees, and the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB).
  • Participating in large scale planning projects, such as the Municipal Development Plan update or Land Use Bylaw enhancement.
  • Acting as a key contact and facilitator with internal and external clients, including other departments and city staff, land developers, consultants, businesses, council, neighbouring municipalities, and the general public to provide complete and professional information in a timely manner

What YOU Bring

  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta legislation, regulations, and procedures related to planning and development
  • Knowledge of theoretical land use planning principles, local land use planning policies, subdivision and neighbourhood design, and possess the ability to make land use decisions and recommendations.
  • A positive attitude and proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external clients, including staff, residents, business owners, industry, neighbouring municipalities, and other agencies.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset, demonstrated problem solving skills, and the ability to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks within a fast paced, high-volume environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong story‑telling skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly in both written and oral formats to diverse audiences.
  • Flexibility to alternate between technical to philosophical planning responsibilities as required in the task or project.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license
  • What WE Offer

  • And an amazing team to work with!
