Who We Are

Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

The support provided by the Department of Student Services to students throughout their academic journey at SFU extends beyond academics. Student Services can assist Students with personal student needs, whether it’s physical and mental health and well-being, accessibility requirements, spiritual and faith-based matters, international and newcomer student advising, Indigenous and Black community spaces and guidance, rights and safety concerns, and more.

About the Role

The Black Student Life Coordinator will help to manage the daily operations of the Black Student Centre (BSC). The primary responsibilities include addressing the BSC's administrative, programming, and operational needs. This position is essential to ensuring the smooth functioning of the BSC by actively planning and organizing events, activities, and workshops. By focusing on cultural, wellness, academic, and career-oriented initiatives, the coordinator plays a vital role in helping Black-identifying students transition successfully to university life.

The ideal candidate is comfortable conducting outreach within the university, engaging directly with students, and building meaningful relationships through active, visible presence. Confidence in speaking with and engaging students is essential. The candidate must be able to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and have a strong understanding of the Black student population at SFU. This includes demonstrated knowledge of, and connection with, student associations and groups that support and advocate for Black students at SFU. Strong communication skills are required, including experience with social media platforms and the ability to apply marketing and communications strategies to reach and engage students effectively. Comfort with communication-related IT programs and software is also necessary. Equally important is a demonstrated commitment to relationship-building. The candidate must value creating and maintaining strong connections both within and outside the university, including feeling comfortable and confident engaging with the local Black community in British Columbia.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Communications, or related discipline and three years of related experience designing and managing Black support programs, community engagement and services at a post-secondary institution or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of Black secondary and post-secondary education issues and of Black cultures and traditions.
  • Excellent knowledge of best practices in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Excellent knowledge of communication, promotion, and marketing principles, practices and strategies using print and electronic media, including social media applications.
  • Excellent knowledge of website development, content management systems, social media dashboards, and web analytics tools (i.e., Google Analytics). Good knowledge of student engagement and event management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, presentation).
