About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) reports to the Director of Care and / or designate and is the role model and team leader who coordinates and supervises the activities and duties of those who deliver direct resident care. The RN performs duties and monitors departmental activities in accordance with established standards, regulations, policies and procedures to maximize person served holistic quality care while maintaining resident respect and dignity.

Responsibilities

Include but not limited to;

  • Assesses residents’ needs; implements and evaluates individualized resident-centred care plans.
  • Supports LPN’s to review and update care plans as required, offers clinical decision making support including clinical assessments to support the care team on a daily basis as needed.
  • Administers medications and treatments as per established standards, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for community wound management, assisting LPNs with assessment, treatment and documentation as needed, facilitating referral to Wound Care Specialist when necessary. Submits wound report to Director of Care (DOC) or designate weekly.
  • Provides direct care to residents as necessary and liaises with other disciplines and departments to ensure quality focused resident care.
  • Liaises with physicians, community agency representatives, families, visitors and volunteers.
  • Supports the move in process, works collaboratively with other team members and follows community policies and protocols
  • Attends Care Conferences in the absence of the DOC or designate.
  • Ensures residents rights are observed and adheres to a holistic philosophy of wellness.
  • Acts as First Aid attendant when on duty and that all injured staff completes the required documentation.
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through :

oaccident prevention,

oknowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,

othe safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and

oUtilizing infection control procedures

  • Coordinates and supervises care staff; directs their work and assigns duties as necessary to ensure resident focused care is provided and resident rights are observed.
  • Provides clinical direction to community care staff in the absence of the DOC or designate.
  • Fulfills clinical on call duties as required
  • Performs community audits and correlates data to submit to DOC or designate.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees.
  • Provides educational material and direction on procedures to clinical staff and demonstrates techniques.
  • Provides informed input into staff evaluations while supporting LPN’s in the coach / mentor for the HCA staff.
  • Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and educational in-services
  • Maintains paper and electronic documents as per established standards, regulations, policies and procedures, ensuring confidentiality is maintained as per policies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Qualifications and Skills :

  • Graduate of an approved program for Nursing and holds a current license with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as an RN.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing an asset.
  • Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification and CPR.
  • Successful annual Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) competency testing.
  • Previous experience in a long term care facility an asset.
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Computer skills including the ability to navigate basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Must be in good health, physically able to perform repetitive tasks, lift, squat, bend, stand and walk as required to perform the duties of the position.
