Job description

A leading Canadian consulting engineering firm specializing in high-performance facilities is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Building Performance & Commissioning Engineer. The firm provides mechanical, electrical, controls, commissioning, and energy engineering solutions across healthcare, institutional, commercial, industrial, and municipal sectors.

In this role, you will lead and support a wide portfolio of new building commissioning, recommissioning, system optimization, energy analysis, and decarbonization projects. You will act as a key technical liaison, working directly with client managers, facility operations, contractors, architects, design teams, and controls specialists across every project phase—from initial planning and design through construction, functional testing, operational tuning, and post-occupancy verification.

Advantages
• High-Impact Projects: Work on technically complex healthcare, institutional, municipal, and large-scale decarbonization initiatives.
• Leadership & Growth: Opportunity to lead innovative building performance strategies, shape energy transition plans, and mentor junior technical staff.
• Collaborative Culture: Thrive in an engineering environment focused on technical excellence, continuous learning, and sustainable design.
• Professional Support: Financial support and mentorship for pursuing key industry designations and professional development.
• Total Compensation: Competitive base salary paired with a performance-based bonus structure and comprehensive health benefits package.

Responsibilities
• Building Commissioning: Lead new and existing facility commissioning processes in accordance with ASHRAE Guideline 0/1, CSA, and industry standards. Develop commissioning plans, test procedures, deficiency tracking logs, and final reporting. Conduct design reviews, oversee functional performance testing, and verify seasonal system operation.
• Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) & Optimization: Conduct site investigations, assess complex HVAC systems, analyze automation trends, and resolve operational deficiencies to improve occupant comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency.
• Energy Engineering & Decarbonization: Perform facility energy audits, design energy conservation measures (ECMs), and conduct precise calculations for utility savings, peak demand reduction, GHG reduction, and ROI/lifecycle costs. Develop phased low-carbon roadmaps and evaluate electrification technologies like heat pumps and geothermal systems.
• Mechanical & Controls Engineering: Perform load calculations, review mechanical/electrical drawings for compliance, refine HVAC control logic, and optimize sequence of operations across primary automation platforms.
• Measurement & Verification (M&V) & Analytics: Perform energy modeling, benchmark utility consumption, analyze building data, and execute M&V protocols to confirm performance post-implementation.
• Project Management & Delivery: Manage multiple client engagements concurrently, draft technical proposals and reports, manage project timelines and budgets, and foster strong partner relationships.

Qualifications
• Education & Professional Status: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or fully eligible for registration.
• Experience: 7–10+ years focused on building mechanical systems, deep building commissioning expertise, and hands-on experience with Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx).
• Technical Mastery: In-depth technical knowledge of HVAC systems, hydronic/air distribution, central heating/cooling plants, building automation systems (BAS), and control sequences.
• Codes & Standards: Strong proficiency with relevant local building codes, ASHRAE standards, CSA guidelines, and sustainable design practices.
• Soft Skills & Travel: Exceptional written technical reporting and verbal communication abilities; strong multi-project organization skills; valid driver's license and willingness to visit local project sites.
• Preferred Certifications & Tools: Recognized credentials such as CCP, CBCP, CxA, CEM, CMVP, or LEED AP are strong assets. Familiarity with energy simulation software (HAP, eQUEST, EnergyPlus, IESVE, RETScreen) and major BAS interfaces (Niagara, Metasys, Delta, Distech, Siemens, Schneider) is highly valued.

Summary
The Senior Building Performance & Commissioning Engineer plays a fundamental role in evaluating, optimizing, and future-proofing client building assets. By combining deep technical mechanical expertise, mastery of automation controls, and thorough analytical modeling, this position directly drives reductions in energy consumption, lowers carbon footprints, ensures system reliability, and helps client organizations achieve their long-term sustainability and net-zero targets.
