Job description

Reporting to the HR Manager, the Health and Safety (H&S) Advisor is Argus' designated occupational health and safety practitioner. The role supports the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of our Health and Safety Management System (HSMS), aligned with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code, as well as the Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) Certificate of Recognition (COR) program.

The H&S Advisor serves as an advisor and subject-matter resource, providing guidance, recommendations, and practical tools to workers, supervisors, managers, and senior leadership to support Argus’ health and safety obligations.

Working collaboratively with operational leadership, the H&S Advisor supports the identification and management of workplace risks, implementation of health and safety programs, and continuous improvement across Argus’ three facilities. The role provides technical advice, coordination, and recommendations to support management in establishing priorities and meeting organizational health and safety responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Role accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Argus' Health and Safety Management System.
  • Develop and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, forms, records, and other supporting documentation.
  • Facilitate and support hazard assessments, workplace inspections, risk assessments, and the identification of appropriate controls.
  • Support Supervisors and Managers with incident and near-miss investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action development.
  • Track health and safety deficiencies and corrective actions, identify trends, and communicate significant or unresolved concerns to the appropriate leaders.
  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain health and safety training, orientation, and competency-related programs and records.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including emergency response planning, drills, and follow-up actions.
  • Conduct Argus’ internal COR audit, coordinate required audit activities and documentation, support audit action planning, and monitor progress on identified improvements. Coordinate external COR audit activities as required.
  • Serve as the employer co-chair of the Health and Safety Committee; coordinate meetings, agendas, minutes, action items, and follow-up; support worker participation and consultation; and recommend improvements to management.
  • Complete required WCB reporting and manage return-to-work activities, including coordinating documentation, communicating with employees, Supervisors, Managers, HR, WCB, and other relevant parties, monitoring restrictions and accommodations, and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Support regulatory inspections, investigations, and other interactions with Alberta OHS, and support the dangerous work refusal process in collaboration with responsible Supervisors and Managers.
  • Prepare health and safety reports, statistics, communications, and recommendations to support management decision-making and organizational improvement.
  • Monitor applicable Alberta occupational health and safety requirements and provide guidance and recommendations to management regarding compliance needs.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary occupational health and safety certificate, diploma or degree. Preference will be given to those possessing the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in an occupational health and safety role, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code.
  • Experience with health and safety management systems, hazard assessment, incident investigation, workplace inspections, and health and safety training.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to large audiences.
  • Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships with employees, Supervisors, Managers, and Senior Leadership.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between Edmonton and Nisku facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The position includes a combination of office-based administrative work and regular presence in active production environments.
  • Exposure to industrial manufacturing hazards is expected, and appropriate personal protective equipment is required in production areas.
