Position Summary:As a full-time, on-site position reporting directly to the Production Supervisor or another designated individual, the Lead Hand, Paint Department is responsible for overseeing daily paint line operations for patio door components and assemblies. This role is responsible for ensuring high quality finishing standards, maintaining efficient workflow, supporting production targets, and ensuring compliance with workplace safety and environmental requirements. The Lead Hand provides hands-on leadership to the paint department team, coordinates daily activities, and supports continuous improvement initiatives to maintain operational efficiency and product quality.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise daily painting operations including surface preparation, priming, spraying, curing, and finishing of components.
  • Ensure proper setup, operation, and maintenance of spray booths, drying/curing systems, spray guns, and related equipment.
  • Monitor workflow to maintain production schedules, productivity targets, and minimize downtime.
  • Lead, assign, and coordinate daily tasks for paint line employees.
  • Train and support team members on painting techniques, equipment use, safety procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Foster a safe, productive, and quality focused work environment within the paint department.
  • Ensure all painted products meet finish quality standards, including color match, consistency, adhesion, and surface appearance.
  • Perform in process inspections and address defects such as runs, orange peel, contamination, or finish inconsistencies.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Production teams to resolve recurring quality concerns and improve processes.
  • Enforce safe handling, storage, labeling, and disposal of paints, solvents, coatings, and chemicals.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace safety policies, environmental procedures, and company standards.
  • Monitor use of PPE, ventilation systems, and fire safety procedures within the department.
  • Report incidents, hazards, equipment concerns, and near misses promptly to management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve paint efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize cycle times.
  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives within the paint department.
  • Assist in implementing new coatings, equipment, processes, or operational improvements as required.
  • Monitor paint, coatings, consumables, and inventory levels and coordinate material requirements with purchasing or management.
  • Maintain proper organization, labeling, and storage of all paint products and related materials.
  • Ensure routine cleaning and maintenance of spray guns, booths, and related equipment.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams regarding repairs, servicing, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Report daily production status, operational concerns, and department performance metrics to the Production Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to production output, defects, and material usage.
  • Coordinate workflow and communication with upstream and downstream departments, including assembly, quality, final inspection, and shipping teams.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned based on operational requirements.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3–5+ years of experience in industrial painting, preferably in windows/doors or similar manufacturing.
  • Previous leadership or team lead experience preferred.

Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of paint application techniques (spray systems, coatings, surface prep).
  • Understanding of different materials (vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, etc.).
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality finishes.
  • Leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Good communication and organizational abilities.

Technical Skills:
  • Experience with spray booths, HVLP systems, curing ovens, and related equipment.
  • Familiarity with safety data sheets (SDS) and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Basic computer skills for tracking production and inventory.

Working Conditions:
  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes, chemicals, and noise (proper PPE required).
  • Physically active role involving standing, lifting, and repetitive motions.
  • May require shift work or overtime based on production needs.
