Hours of Work:
Monday – Friday shift from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Up to 30 hours per week
Dependent on program needs
No guarantee of hours

The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the After-School Program Leader will assist in planning, organizing, facilitating and supervising recreation activities for children attending the City’s After-School Program.

Job Duties

1. Administrative
Complete reports and maintain records on all activities as required.
Submit time sheets as required.
Maintain confidentiality and privacy in all matters affecting or involving the program and/or service.
Assist with the planning and delivery of recreation and leisure programs and activities.
2. Program Delivery
Plan, organize, and facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and creative activities for children in Grades K–6 in alignment with program goals and themes.
Ensure daily activities are engaging, age-appropriate, inclusive, and supportive of children's social, emotional, and physical development.
Modify activities to meet diverse needs, abilities, and interests of participants.
Responsible for the set up and clean up activity spaces before and after programming, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
Encourage positive participation, cooperation, and teamwork among children during all activities.
Lead games, crafts, sports, STEM projects, and special activities both indoors and outdoors.
Support the development of leadership, responsibility, and life skills in children through intentional programming.
Collaborate with fellow program leaders and supervisors to review and evaluate activities, providing input for program improvements.
Comply with the City of Selkirk’s child supervision policies and behavior guidance procedures during all activities.
Ensure all activities are delivered in a manner that prioritizes safety, inclusion, and respect.
Ensure that the facilities, equipment and supplies used for programs are maintained in good condition and properly stored.
Responsible for the safety, supervision, wellbeing and care of all program participants at all times.
Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with this job description and approved program policies, standards and procedures.

Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements shall include:
Current Grade eleven (11) student
Valid Class 5 or G Driver’s License
Experience working with children.
Clear Current Child Abuse Registry Check.
Clear Current Criminal Record Check.
Valid Emergency (Basic) First-Aid & CPR-C Certification.
Strong people skills; friendly, cooperative, energetic, responsible.
Effective customer service and teamwork skills.
Ability to communicate respectfully; with tact and diplomacy. This includes the ability to understand and deliver written and verbal instructions.
Physically capable of participating in recreational activities such as; hiking, running, and physical games.
The ability to work indoors and outdoors in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions.
Ability to attend work regularly, punctually and work a variety of hours.
Demonstrated organizational and teamwork skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization and external contacts.
Demonstrated competency in safe work practices, knowledge and understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
Desired Qualifications shall include:
Successful completion of a Post-Secondary Diploma or are currently enrolled in a program related to Educational Assistant, Recreation, Education, or Kinesiology.

Comments

This is a Casual Non-Union position ranging from October 2026 – April 2027, working various hours up to 30 hours a week. This position is excluded from the Collective Agreement and is open to all applicants. Applications will be accepted until August 20, 2026.
