Job description

Fire Protection Piping Engineer

  • Pay Rate: $98.00/hour, depending on experience
  • Contract Length: 1 year
  • Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

Raise is currently hiring a Fire Protection Piping Engineer on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our Client, is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada.

Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.

Description

The Fire Protection Design Engineer in this role will focus on the design, analysis, and implementation of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations and associated infrastructure. Projects range from equipment upgrades and lifecycle replacements to large multidisciplinary capital programs involving generation assets across the province. The team supports hydroelectric generation facilities through capital projects, condition assessments, asset management initiatives, operational support, and specialized engineering design services.

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Leadership: Act as a safety leader, championing fire and life safety engineering principles.
  • System Design: Lead the design and development of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations, including sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, special hazard protection systems, water supply systems, and associated piping networks.
  • Professional of Record: Prepare and seal engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and reports as the Professional of Record.
  • Assessments & Evaluations: Perform fire protection engineering assessments, field investigations, site assessments, hazard analyses, code compliance reviews, and risk-based evaluations.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, protection and controls, operations, maintenance, construction management, and project management teams.
  • Project Lifecycle Execution: Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed engineering designs from project initiation through construction, commissioning, and turnover. Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, construction packages, and procurement support documentation.
  • Consultant Management: Review and accept the work of external consultants and contractors on behalf of the organization
  • Project Support: Support project planning, cost estimating, scheduling, and construction verification activities. Participate in water supply evaluations, hydraulic calculations, fire scenario assessments, and system performance analyses.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, technologists, designers, and consultants.
  • Continuous Improvement: Develop practical, cost-effective solutions supporting operational requirements and asset management strategies while continuously improving engineering practices, standards, and tools.
  • Field Travel: Travel to and work at hydroelectric generating facilities throughout British Columbia as required.

Qualifications

  • Senior candidates require a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of fire protection systems in industrial, utility, power generation, mining, oil and gas, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Proven experience executing engineering work from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Technical Knowledge & Codes
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying:
    • NFPA 850: Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants and High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations.
    • NFPA 13: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.
    • NFPA 25: Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.
    • NFPA 15: Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection.
    • NFPA 20: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection.
    • NFPA 22: Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection.
    • ASME B31.1: Power Piping.
  • Additional asset knowledge includes NFPA 72, CAN/ULC-S524, CAN/ULC-S1001, and applicable BC building, fire, and electrical codes.
  • Software Experience
    • Proficiency with one or more of the following tools:
    • AutoCAD / AutoCAD Plant 3D
    • Navisworks
    • Autodesk ReCap
    • AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, ELITE, HASS (or equivalent)
  • Preferred Experience & Preferences
  • Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in:
    • 3D plant modelling, coordination, laser scanning, and point cloud integration.
    • Sprinkler system hydraulic calculations, layout design, and fire alarm/detection system design.
    • Hydroelectric generating stations or heavy industrial utility environments.
    • Acting as Engineer of Record or Professional of Record.
    • Performance-based fire protection design methodologies, condition assessments, and lifecycle asset management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to lead technical discussions across all organizational levels.
  • High degree of ownership, initiative, accountability, and strong organizational/project coordination skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
  • Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired

Additional Information

Location: Burnaby, BC (with travel to hydroelectric generating stations across British Columbia)

Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.

Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”.This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network
