Job description
Are you a dynamic and enthusiastic Registered Veterinary Nurse ready to take on a varied and rewarding challenge? Join our team as a Ninja Nurse - a unique rotational role that allows you to work across multiple departments within our referral hospital.

As a ninja nurse, you’ll rotate around many areas of the hospital:

ward areas

imaging to support sedations

oncology

and theatre

Working as part of the hospital nursing team to provide support to all clinical services and helping to support the flow of cases through each department.

These roles give the successful candidates an opportunity to explore the referral hospital and expand on referral experience and knowledge. We are looking for dynamic and hard-working nurses who are willing to move around the hospital, under the direction of the Nursing Management and head nurse teams. These roles would be ideal for someone that is wanting to work in the referral setting without selecting one specialism.

We are ideally looking for a nurse with at least 1-year experience as a qualified nurse.

Previous experience in a referral environment is desirable but not essential.

You will be involved with teaching and supervision of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations.

Flexibility will be necessary as the post will require participation in the OOH rota, to include some weekend work.

The main purpose of the post is to support the hospital with an ability to staff in a dynamic way. These roles will rotate around the hospital, primarily in medicine, surgery/neurology ward and theatres. The nurse/s within this role will be moved to support areas dependent on clinical and staffing needs. This role will assist with inpatient care, procedures, surgical theatre cases and general maintenance and upkeep of the hospital. They would participate in an OOH weekend rota. This role will work within the terms of the RCVS guide to professional conduct.

Principal Accountabilities:

Carry out clinical nursing duties throughout the Small Animal Hospital, under the direction of the head nurses, assistant nursing manager and nursing manager.

Dispensing and administration (under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon) medication to animals, maintaining accurate stock control and following protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing, handling, and giving clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medication.

Maintaining accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client/patient information.

Ensuring that all procedures and consumable are accurately invoiced on patients accounts for duration of stay.

Participating in clinical governance activities for the hospital, including significant event reporting, M&M discussions, clinical audit, evidence-based medicine and reflective learning.

Keep up to date with CPD in line with RCVS guidelines.

Teaching of veterinary and veterinary nursing undergraduates during clinical rotations. Acting as a clinical coach to veterinary nursing undergraduates (training can be completed once started if not already obtained).

Communication with owners regarding in-patients as appropriate, to include liaison with the nursing team and arranging owner visits.

Support with routine discharge appointments, to include instructions/advice on likely side effects of medications, clinical responses, and management of patient.

Ensure stock levels of equipment and consumables is monitored, restock as necessary.

Assessment and supervision of BVSc and VNPA undergraduates during clinical rotations. To include undertaking the role of Clinical Coach and professional mentor

Provision of CPD for internal and external nurses, to include webinars and presentations

Communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues.

Ensuring standard operating protocols (SOP's) for area are available, relevant, and up to date.

Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.

Maintain effective contact with the Clinical Governance Manager to identify and assist in resolving issues as they arise.

Accountable for the compliance with health and safety regulations within teams, ensuring a safe working environment, assisting with fire drills and evacuation procedures, conducting risk assessments and COSHH for the relevant areas, implementing safety protocols, promoting a culture of safety within the team, and promptly addressing and reporting any safety concerns or incidents and taking corrective actions/escalation, as necessary.

Champion the Continuous Improvement (CI) culture and collective message of what we want to achieve and why. Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Encourage and support CI and problem solving within your teams. Remove constraints and be available to provide guidance, advice, and support.

Maintain a good working relationship with all team members.

Communicate in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues.

Carry out all other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager.
