Job description

Associate Producer

Location: Edmonton, AB | In-Person | Full-Time| Union Position

About the Role

CKUA is recognized as one of Canada's first public broadcasters, and it continues to inspire and guide a world-wide community of loyal arts and culture enthusiasts along a journey of musical discovery every day. CKUA offers more than 45 expertly curated multi-genre musical programs, plus other enriching arts and cultural content on-air and online. CKUA serves 380 communities across Alberta with FM Radio and reaches listeners around the world with live-streaming and digital content through CKUA.com, the CKUA App, and social platforms. We are an inclusive, creative, hardworking group on a musical mission to enrich lives and support the arts.

A great interview, a feature that sticks with a listener, a podcast episode someone sends to a friend, all of it starts with research, prep, raw tape, and careful editing before it's ever ready for air. At CKUA, this Associate Producer position is part of the team doing that work, focused on production and editorial craft.

You'll join the Content team to research, interview, record, and edit the features, segments, podcasts, and sessions that CKUA's hosts and programs rely on. You'll work closely with the Senior Producer, hosts, and fellow producers from first idea through final edit, help cover live broadcasts and special events, and keep several projects moving at different stages at once.

No two projects look quite the same. One week you might be deep in interview prep for a feature, the next you're editing a podcast episode or supporting music curation for a session. The common thread is craft: knowing how to shape raw material into something clear and worth hearing, no matter which host or program it's built for.

We're looking for someone with strong research and editorial instincts, solid production skills, and the kind of judgment that makes a piece of tape into a story to share.

As CKUA moves into its next century, the features, podcasts, and interviews you produce will be

How You'll Make an Impact

You'll research topics, build background notes, and prep questions before you ever hit record, then conduct interviews with the person who's actually presenting the piece in mind, adjusting your approach depending on who that host is and what their show sounds like. From there, you'll take the raw tape through editing, using Reaper or Adobe Audition to turn it into something clean, well-paced, and ready for air.

You'll take on defined content projects of your own, features, podcasts, sessions, and see them through from the first idea to the final file, some on an ongoing basis, others as fill-in work when a piece needs covering. Hosting isn't central to this role, but you may occasionally provide on-air fill-in coverage as needed.

You'll also show up for the bigger productions. Alongside the Senior Producer, you'll help capture special events and live broadcasts, including video of performances and live sessions, and you'll stay comfortable running the board and automation system as an operator or fill-in when needed. You'll also review and assess taped shows before they air, coordinating the technical resources needed to get that done.

Music is part of the job too. You'll support curation for the features and projects you're working on, drawing on a real knowledge of genres and how they connect. And because your work doesn't stop once the edit is done, you'll produce social posts and promotional material, both for your own projects and for other hosts across the schedule, keep program logs and materials organized, and stay in touch with the listeners, artists, and community members connected to what you're producing.

You'll propose and run smaller projects on your own, and pitch in on larger ones using tools like Asana, picking up light coordination as those come up. Over time, you'll build real depth in production, research, and project management, the kind of range that lets you take on more complex work as you go.

What You Bring

You've probably got at least 3 or 4 years of relevant on-air, production, or broadcast experience, enough that juggling a handful of projects, formats, and platforms is just part of how you work. You've produced content across more than one platform, broadcast, digital, social, or video, or you can show you'd pick that range up quickly.

You know your way around music, genuinely, not just the trivia, but a working sense of different genres and how they connect to one another culturally, enough to support curation on the features and projects you're working on. Separately, you bring strong research, writing, and editorial skills, sharp enough that colleagues can build on your work without having to redo it, with the kind of judgment that knows what makes a story land.

You're comfortable with audio and video editing and post-production, and you know how to coordinate content across multiple hosts and programs at once, adjusting research, tone, and format to fit whoever you're producing for. You've also got an eye for workflow, spotting ways to make projects run more consistently and efficiently, not just finishing the one in front of you.

Project management tools like Asana aren't new to you, and you're used to holding several projects at different stages without losing the thread on any of them.

Broadcast school or a related media/communications background is a nice to have, not a requirement. What matters more is the judgment, the craft, and a real interest in the music, arts, and cultural landscape CKUA's audience cares about.

You work well within a collaborative environment and understand how to contribute to a positive, respectful team culture.

You align with CKUA's values of Community, Diversity, Inclusion, Creativity, Curiosity, and Authenticity, and live the values into your daily work.

You're ready to be part of a team that's passionate about what they do and committed to making a difference and bringing together community.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), unionized position, with terms and conditions governed by the Collective Agreement between CKUA and IBEW Local 2228. The role is in-person based, located in CKUA's office in downtown Edmonton in the historic Alberta Hotel on Jasper Avenue. The pay range for this position starts at $22.75 per hour.

In addition to comprehensive benefits and a pension plan, this role offers the chance to shape the content, interviews, and features that carry CKUA's community-powered arts and music mission forward.

We will be interviewing qualified candidates as they present themselves.

CKUA welcomes applications from all qualified individuals. We are particularly interested in and encourage applications from equity-seeking communities, including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions.

CKUA is a donor-supported arts organization that inspires and connects through the power of music, arts, culture and story. With a focus on musical discovery, we showcase the best creative work from Alberta and beyond and deliver it on-air, online and in-person.

In the spirit of our journey to promote reconciliation, we honour the truth of the shared history and acknowledge that we operate on Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 territories.

Treaty 6 territory is the traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakoda, Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway, Saulteaux/Anishinaabe and many others whose histories, languages and cultures continue to influence our vibrant community of Amiskwaciwaskahigan, also known as Edmonton. Treaty 7 is the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy which includes the Siksika, Kainai and Pikani, the Tsuut’ina and the Stoney Nakoda nations including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley nations. We also recognize the Métis people and the Inuit who make their home in Mohkins'tsis,
