Are you passionate about urban ecology protecting local wildlife and promoting environmental stewardship across Edmonton The Parks and Urban Forestry team is seeking a dedicated Wildlife Coordinator to lead field surveys manage ecological data and provide expert guidance on local wildlife this role you will play a crucial part in coordinating wildlife sweeps conducting habitat evaluations and mentoring field staff to ensure city operations align with provincial and federal environmental regulations. Working across diverse urban and natural spaces you will collaborate with internal project teams operational crews and external partners to support Edmontons urban biodiversity. You will also contribute to long-term natural area management frameworks continuous improvement of environmental practices and public awareness about local urban wildlife. What will you do

  • Implement best practices and protocols for wildlife sweeps biodiversity monitoring and presence/absence surveys in natural and naturalized areas
  • Mentor train and guide field staff students and scholars on wildlife sweep protocols and natural area management
  • Coordinate daily field schedules respond to sweep requests from operational crews and determine appropriate setbacks or mitigation measures to protect legislated species
  • Produce comprehensive wildlife sweep reports analyze field data and provide actionable recommendations to internal project teams
  • Update GIS layers and data using tools like ESRI ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 to track biodiversity and wildlife features
  • Collaborate with internal operational teams external partners and community collaborators to promote natural area stewardship and regulatory compliance
  • Assist in developing and implementing natural area management frameworks reviewing development plans and supporting grant applications
  • Develop engaging social media content highlighting local wildlife to share with the community through approved channels
  • Undergraduate degree in Biology Conservation Ecology or a related field plus a minimum of four (4) years of related experience working with collaborators in ecology wildlife biology or natural areas management; OR
  • Two-year Technical Diploma in Ecology Biological Sciences Conservation or a related field plus a minimum of six (6) years of related experience

Assets

  • Professional Biologist (.) or Biologist in Training (BIT) designation
  • Valid First Aid Certification
  • Specialized training courses in wildlife and natural area management from recognized organizations

Skills required for success

  • Strong knowledge of municipal provincial and federal wildlife legislation and protection standards
  • Demonstrated ability to identify local flora and fauna accurately in the field
  • Proficiency in field survey techniques and mapping/data applications (ESRI ArcGIS Field Maps Survey123) as well as Google Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences
  • Strong problem-solving critical thinking and conflict-resolution skills to balance operational priorities with wildlife protection mandates
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within cross-functional teams
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) or higher
  • Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required safety certifications

Work Environment

  • Mix of outdoor field work in diverse weather conditions and indoor office/administrative tasks
  • Requires physical mobility (walking standing bending navigating uneven terrain in natural areas) and high sensory attention/visual acuity
  • Occasional exposure to biting insects extreme temperatures precipitation and dead/sick wildlife
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety footwear head protection skin protection and eye/hand protection is required as needed
