Job Summary

Bring your clinical expertise, dedication, and passion for providing quality, compassionate care to a challenging and rewarding role as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Orthopaedic Surgery at Burnaby Hospital (BH). We are currently looking for an NP to join our dynamic Orthopaedic Surgery team, delivering comprehensive care to patients with complex medical needs across the continuum of elective and non-elective orthopedic surgical care.

This Relief position is available until November 14, 2027 or return of incumbent.

Practicing within a collaborative, team-based model, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work closely with orthopaedic surgeons who remain the Most Responsible Provider (MRP) for surgical care and interprofessional colleagues to deliver seamless, patient-centered care from admission through to discharge or transfer. The NP plays a key role in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients across the continuum of elective and non-elective orthopaedic care. Responsibilities include participating in daily rounds, coordinating discharge planning and transitions of care, consulting with medical subspecialties, and supporting community reintegration. The NP also contributes to quality improvement, education, and research initiatives.

Burnaby Hospital is a large community hospital which provides care to the province’s third-largest municipality and services offered include primary and secondary acute care as well as several specialized services such as 24/7 emergency care, general and internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, ambulatory care, and other outpatient clinics.

Be part of our clinical enhancement program with regular in-house skills development such as 12 lead ECG interpretation, Point of Care ultrasound (POCUS), suturing and x-ray interpretation in addition to receiving centralized NP orientation. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients/clients/residents including diagnosing diseases, disorders, and conditions. The Nurse Practitioner initiates treatment including health care management, therapeutic interventions and prescribes medications in accordance with the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions, and employer policies and procedures. The Nurse Practitioner provides professional guidance to other health professionals and practices autonomously and interdependently within the context of an interdisciplinary health care team, making referrals to specialist physicians and others as appropriate.

The position collaborates with patients/clients/residents and other health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for patients/clients/residents, families and communities; develops and implements population and evidence based strategies to improve health and participates in policy-making activities that influence health services and practices. The position participates in peer review and self review to evaluate the outcome of services at the patient/client/resident, community and population level.

Responsibilities

• Diagnoses and treats previously undiagnosed patients/clients/residents for undifferentiated diseases, disorders, and conditions within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice; writes orders for treatment and medications; provides first line care in emergencies.
• Monitors ongoing care, orders appropriate screening diagnostic investigations; interprets reports of investigations and analyzes information to monitor progress and plan treatment.
• Establishes priorities for management of health, diseases, disorders, and conditions; provides follow-up treatment; communicates with patients/clients/residents and families about health findings, diagnoses and priorities, outcomes and prognoses; supports and counsels patients/clients/residents in their responses to diseases, disorders and conditions.
• Collaborates and consults with physicians or other health care and social service providers as appropriate to assess and diagnose patient/client/resident status. Develops and implements treatment plans. May admit and discharge patients/clients/residents to facilities according to organizational policies.
• Prescribes drugs within the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable employer policies and procedures.
• Assigns work to other nursing and health care personnel; evaluates work and provides education and supervision as necessary; hires staff, and evaluates staff performance.
• Participates in research contributing to improved patient/client/resident care and advances in nursing, health policy development and population health.
• Maintains population health focus by implementing screening and health promotion activities for populations at risk.
• Participates in interdisciplinary staff and nursing education through case presentations, mentoring, role modeling and facilitating the exchange of knowledge in the classroom, the clinical setting and the community; fosters health care partnerships.
• Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures related to nursing, interdisciplinary care, and health system practices.
• Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Current practicing registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Recent relevant clinical nursing experience.
