Job description

Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Business + Media is seeking a temporary, part-time (0.2 FTE) Faculty, 3D Modeling, Art and Animation. We are seeking individuals who are highly qualified, enthusiastic, committed to quality and innovation in meeting our students’ needs, and who value the importance of teamwork in the workplace.

  • MDAA 3642 – 3D Animation 3

The ability to animate life-like characters whether human or creature through the use of realistic facial animation, hand gestures, body language and emotions is a foundational skill in the world of animation and digital art. Students in this course will examine the advanced techniques and details of character animations. Students will be implementing acting techniques on to 3D characters. Students will use motion capture data that will be imported into the scene and under the instructor’s supervision, clean up and apply motion capture animation to their characters. Finally, students will explore how to create animations for video games. Duties & Responsibilities The successful candidate will deliver high-quality instruction within the 3D Modeling, Art and Animation diploma program. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering course materials; assessing and evaluating student performance; providing mentorship, feedback, and academic support; maintaining course records; fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment; and ensuring curriculum delivery reflects current industry standards and practices. Instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, contribute to program quality and continuous improvement initiatives, and support student success through professional, effective, and student-centered teaching. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience as a Character Animator, Gameplay Animator, Cinematic Animator, or a closely related role within the game, animation, or visual effects industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise creating high-quality character animation using Autodesk Maya.
  • Strong understanding of advanced animation principles, including timing, spacing, posing, body mechanics, arcs, anticipation, overlap, follow-through, weight, and appeal.
  • Demonstrated expertise creating believable acting performances through facial expressions, body language, hand gestures, lip synchronization, and emotional storytelling.
  • Experience creating gameplay animations, including locomotion, combat, transitions, and state-based animation suitable for real-time game engines.
  • Experience working with motion capture data, including cleanup, editing, blending, and integrating motion capture with hand-keyed animation.
  • Strong understanding of animation workflows, including blocking, spline refinement, polishing, reference analysis, camera animation, and feedback-driven iteration.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide constructive artistic and technical feedback that helps students improve both the technical quality and performance of their animation.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience in the animation production pipeline, including animation, rigging, character setup, layout, cameras, and collaboration with modeling, lighting, and technical art teams.
  • Experience working with animation systems in Unreal Engine or other modern game engines.
  • Experience collaborating with rigging, gameplay, cinematic, or technical animation teams.
  • Experience directing animation performances or mentoring junior animators in a professional production environment.
