Job description

About Shalem Mental Health Network

Since 1963, Shalem has believed that mental health care is about more than treating illness—it's about helping people and communities flourish.

What began as a local counselling ministry has grown into an innovative Christian mental health organization that integrates faith, professional excellence, and restorative practice in the service of individuals, churches, schools, nonprofits, and communities across Canada.

Our Christian faith shapes both our purpose and our practice. We believe every person is created in the image of God, with unique gifts to offer the world. Our work seeks to remove the barriers that keep people from living, leading, serving, and loving others well. In many ways, we help the people who help people—equipping individuals, churches, and organizations to reflect Christ's compassion and participate in God's work of healing and renewal in their communities.

Our faith shapes not only what we do, but how we do it. We are committed to building a workplace marked by compassion, integrity, excellence, and reconciliation. Shalem is a collaborative, innovative, and learning‑focused organization. We enjoy tackling new challenges, developing creative solutions, and continually improving how we serve our communities. We value curiosity, healthy dialogue, continuous learning, and a restorative approach to leadership, teamwork, and conflict.

This is an exciting season at Shalem. We are a staff team of 20+, with a network of 300+ service providers across Canada. Alongside our longstanding counselling and community programs, we’re expanding national partnerships, developing new organizational wellbeing initiatives, strengthening restorative practices, investing in technology and operational systems, and exploring innovative ways to serve churches, nonprofits, and communities across Canada. We’re looking for a leader who is energized by helping build what’s next. As our work continues to grow locally and nationally, we’re looking for leaders who are excited to help build the teams, culture, and organizational foundation that will support our mission for years to come.

About You

  • Your Christian faith seats how you lead, work, and care for others, and you’re excited to contribute to Shalem's mission and culture.
  • You believe healthy organizations create the conditions for people and communities to flourish.
  • You have experience in organizational operations, finance, human resources, and the practical systems that support excellent service.
  • You love connecting with people across different roles, bringing clarity, collaboration, and thoughtful solutions to complex challenges.
  • You come with considerable experience in project management, balancing logistics, big‑picture thinking and healthy relationships.
  • People often describe you as calm, trustworthy, organized, and relational. You bring both strategic thinking and practical follow‑through, and you enjoy creating order from complexity.
  • You thrive in environments that are collaborative, innovative, and continually learning, where relationships matter as much as results.
  • You find deep satisfaction in helping people do their best work by creating clarity, structure, and strong organizational support.
  • Most importantly, you’re excited by the opportunity to join a team that works hard, laughs often, learns together, and careshap deeply about one another.

About the Role

The Operations Director plays a vital leadership role in ensuring Shalem has the operational foundation needed to pursue its mission with excellence. This hands‑on leadership role combines strategic oversight with responsibility for the day‑to‑day operations of a growing organization. As Shalem continues to expand across Canada, we anticipate this role evolving from a hands‑on position toward increasing leadership of organizational systems, cross‑functional coordination, and long‑term operational strategy. This position carries the responsibility of oversight for operations, project management, HR, IT and communications, supported by Shalem’s team and outside contractors.

What you’ll bring

  • 5-10 years of healthy, responsible leadership experience in a non‑profit, public sector, healthcare, education, or similar environment.
  • Experience supporting organizational operations, budgeting, and financial management.
  • A strong understanding of human resources practices and managing people well.
  • Experience improving organizations, coordinating projects, and helping teams navigate change.
  • A clear communication style, building strong relationships, and navigating complexity with sound judgment.
  • Experience balancing strategic thinking with practical implementation well.
  • Excitement to contribute to Shalem's mission and values.

It would be an asset if you have:

  • Experience with governance, risk management, or organizational compliance.
  • Familiarity with AI/CRM/client management software or other organizational technology systems.
  • Experience with restorative practices or a restorative approach to leadership and organizational culture.

How You’ll Contribute

Organizational Operations

  • You ensure Shalem's administrative systems, facilities, technology, and vendor relationships support a healthy and effective workplace.
  • You strengthen policies, processes, and operational systems that help our programs flourish.
  • You oversee organizational risk management, insurance, privacy, and health & safety.

Human Resources

  • You lead recruitment, onboarding, and HR systems that help staff thrive.
  • You support managers with employee relations and HR policies.
  • You oversee benefits administration and employment compliance.
  • You oversee ongoing training

Financial Leadership

  • You partner with the Financial Coordinator to develop the annual organizational budget and support ongoing financial planning.
  • You monitor financial performance, cash flow, and budget variances, helping leadership make informed decisions.
  • You provide oversight of financial systems, internal controls, and organizational financial policies.
  • You collaborate with the Financial Coordinator to support audits, financial reporting, and organizational compliance.

Technology & Systems

  • You champion continuous improvement of Shalem's technology, client management systems, and organizational infrastructure.
  • You help ensure our technology remains secure, effective, and aligned with organizational needs.

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • You serve as a trusted member of Shalem's Leadership Team.
  • You help translate strategic priorities into practical implementation.
  • You strengthen organizational systems, encourage collaboration, and build capacity for future growth.
  • You willingly step in wherever needed, recognizing that every contribution helps Shalem flourish.

Change Management

  • You help lead organizational change with clarity, care, and thoughtful communication.
  • You partner with leaders to implement new initiatives, systems, and organizational improvements while supporting staff through change.
  • You help build a culture that embraces learning, adaptability, and continuous improvement.

Projects & Organizational Initiatives

  • You lead and coordinate cross‑organizational projects, ensuring they are well planned, communicated, and successfully implemented.
  • You provide operational leadership for key organizational initiatives, grants, events, and strategic priorities.
  • You coordinate project teams, timelines, and resources, helping ideas move from vision to reality.

Accountabilities

In this role, you’ll be successful when you:

  • Provide operational leadership that enables Shalem's staff and programs to thrive.
  • Foster effective, compliant, and people‑centred HR practices.
  • Ensure the organization meets legal, financial, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide timely operational insights that strengthen leadership decisions.
  • Continuously improve systems, processes, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Help cultivate a healthy, collaborative workplace where people can do their best work.

Relationships

Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports:

  • Intake Coordinator
  • Contractors (communications, marketing, finance)
