General Description

The Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Balance of Plant team has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer based out of BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby.

The team supports hydroelectric and thermal capital projects by designing auxiliary systems, completing condition assessments for asset management, and providing pre-release project scoping and operational support. Design work focuses on powerplant utility systems and industrial piping, including water, air, oil, gas, and fuel systems. Projects range from small single-discipline assignments to large, multi-discipline projects exceeding $100 million.

Expected to work on-site approximately 3 days per week, with additional hours potentially completed remotely.

Must be willing to travel to facilities and project sites as required. up to 10-15% of the contract, could be 2 days to a week across BC.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:

* Demonstrate safety leadership in all aspects of engineering and project work.

* Act as a design engineer, Professional of Record, and owner’s engineer, including reviewing and accepting external work on behalf of BC Hydro.

* Plan and execute field investigations and site visits, including travel to and work at project sites as required.

* Prepare design calculations, issued-for-construction drawings, specifications, engineering memos, and reports to support project delivery, decision-making, and funding approval.

* Collaborate with other disciplines and groups, including heavy mechanical, power unit, fire protection, protection and controls, electrical, civil, estimating, procurement, operations, construction management, and project management, to develop project scope and engineering solutions.

* Identify and lead improvements to engineering and construction work, work processes, and common practices.

* Develop cost-effective execution plans and solutions for design, construction, operation, and maintenance, including cost-saving initiatives in coordination with stakeholders.

* Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and direction to junior engineers, technologists, consultants, support staff, drafters, and 3D designers.

* Understand and adhere to Standards, Processes and Guidelines

* Manage mechanical engineering design projects and work packages of varying size and complexity.

* Conduct design reviews of work completed by internal teams and external consultants to ensure design standards and specifications are met

Qualifications
Must haves:

* Mechanical Engineering Degree recognized by Canadian Universities

* Registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

* A minimum of four years of relevant experience.

* A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence in good standing.

* Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards, including ASME B31, B16, B36, BPVC series, ASTM, API, MSS, CSA, and BC-specific regulations.

* Experience with industrial water, air, and oil piping systems and related equipment, such as pumps, pump stations, compressors, pressure vessels, and backup diesel generators, including design, stress analysis, process engineering, fabrication, construction, investigations, repairs, modifications, or upgrades.

* Ability to deliver engineering work from conceptual design through final turnover to BC Hydro Operations.

* Strong self-motivation, ownership, sense of urgency, and commitment to high-quality work.

* A results-focused approach with the ability to simplify complex problems, develop practical alternatives, and support risk-based decisions.

* Ability to navigate ambiguity and make reasonable assumptions based on experience to keep work progressing.

* A continuous improvement mindset and willingness to challenge the status quo.

* Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, conflict resolution, teamwork, and presentation skills.

* Knowledge of the hydroelectric industry or transferable experience from utilities, oil and gas, mining, or other heavy industries is an asset.

* Demonstrated experience with 3D plant design, BIM modeling, clash detection, and model coordination using tools such as Autodesk Plant 3D, ReCap, and Navisworks.

Nice to haves:

* Extensive experience delivering industrial piping and HVAC projects in hydroelectric powerplants from concept through construction and commissioning.

* Proficiency in piping design software packages including AFT FATHOM and CAESAR II.
