Job description

Jobber exists to help people in small businesses be successful. We work with small home service businesses, like your local plumbers, painters, and landscapers, to transform the way service is delivered through technology. With Jobber they can quote, schedule, invoice, and collect payments from their customers while providing an easy and professional customer experience. Running a small business today isn’t like it used to be—the way we consume and deliver service is changing rapidly, technology is evolving, and customers expect more. That’s why we put the power and flexibility in their hands to run their businesses how, where, and when they want!

Our culture of transparency, inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation has been recognized by Great Place to Work, Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, and more. Jobber has also been named on the Globe and Mail’s Canada’s Top Growing Companies list, and Deloitte Canada’s Technology Fast 50™, Enterprise Fast 15, and Technology Fast 500™ lists. With an Executive team that has over thirty years of industry experience of leading the way, we’ve come a long way from our first customer in 2011—but we’ve just scratched the surface of what we want to accomplish for our customers.

We help employees grow professionally; we have a ton of onboarding resources, tutorials, hackathons and buddies to support learnings and provide opportunities to innovate. We have a range of experience levels on teams which allows for mentor/mentee opportunities. Leaders at Jobber work with empathy and support employees to build healthy work-life harmony. Bring your dedication and passion to this job to fulfill your goals.

Teams you could join

  • McWeb: We build and maintain the tools, architecture, and foundations that power Jobber Online at scale. We develop shared libraries, standards, and platform capabilities that keep our web applications performant, reliable, and observable for both developers and end users. We also lead the modernization of our frontend stack, adopting new technologies and best practices to improve developer productivity and the user experience. Joining McWeb is an opportunity to shape the future of Jobber's web platform.
  • QuoteMeal: We power Jobber’s quoting and estimating experience, helping service providers win more work with less effort. We build flexible, high-impact web and mobile solutions that make quoting a seamless experience for our customers and their clients. Joining this team is an opportunity to create intuitive solutions that help service providers grow their business.
  • Franchise: This team will build the foundation for Jobber’s customer franchise offering, helping franchisors and multi-location service businesses manage growth across brands, locations, users, permissions, reporting, and operational workflows. This team will tackle deep product and platform challenges, from scalable account architecture and Partner HQ experiences to lead routing, royalty reporting, onboarding, and partner‑specific tooling. This is a high‑impact opportunity to shape how Jobber supports complex customers, starting with franchise groups while creating flexible systems that can grow into broader channel partnership needs.

Staff Software Engineer role

As a technical champion and force multiplier, you lead and mentor teams of exceptional engineers while collaborating closely with Product and Design partners to tackle complex technical challenges. Your expertise spans architecture, design, and hands‑on coding, allowing you to have a significant impact on the product and our customers. A portion of your time is allocated to "Staff Dev Projects," which may include cross‑team initiatives, work acceleration within your team, exploration of emerging technologies, addressing technical debt, or investing in the future of engineering at Jobber.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams to conceptualize, design, and iteratively deliver high‑impact features that address customer needs.
  • Partner with Product and Design teams to shape and define the strategic product roadmap.
  • Identify and lead large‑scale initiatives that drive innovation across multiple teams or departments.
  • Actively participate in code reviews and testing processes to ensure code quality and maintainability.
  • Champion the development of consistent engineering practices and reusable code solutions to enhance overall efficiency.
  • Lead and facilitate group discussions to drive consensus on optimal solutions for complex customer problems.
  • Research, promote, and implement industry best practices within your team's domain, staying at the forefront of technological advancements.
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, bridging the gap between technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members at all levels, fostering their professional growth and career development.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing highly scalable, robust software solutions across multiple layers of the technology stack.
  • Hands‑on experience using tools like ChatGPT, Cursor, and Copilot in your workflow, refining how you balance AI‑driven efficiency with the craft of software development.
  • Proven leadership experience in guiding teams through complex, high‑impact projects and serving as a technical lead.
  • Exceptional proficiency in software design, architecture, and coding, with a focus on maintainability and performance.
  • Outstanding collaboration and communication skills, coupled with the ability to significantly amplify the team’s productivity and effectiveness through mentorship/coaching.
  • Strong self‑motivation and resourcefulness, with the capacity to independently identify and leverage necessary resources for project delivery and problem‑solving.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize tasks effectively in dynamic, fast‑paced environments.
  • Passionate commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, with a track record of staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends.

Preferred experience

  • Experience with our development stack: React, React Native, TypeScript, GraphQL API layer, and Ruby on Rails on AWS.
  • Led cross‑team initiatives and projects.

Hiring Process

Using our engineering hiring process, we will explore the skills and qualifications you bring and match you with one of the teams currently hiring. Our hiring process includes a Talent team interview, a Hiring Manager interview, a take‑home challenge with a follow‑up Functional interview, and a Senior Leadership interview. If a team in particular excites you, feel free to mention it to your Talent Partner.

Work Environment

At Jobber you will choose where you do your most impactful work. You can work from home across Canada, or in a hybrid setting from one of our offices in Edmonton (HQ) or Toronto.

Compensation

This role has a minimum annual salary of $169,200, a midpoint of $199,100, and a maximum salary of $228,900, designed to reflect the progression from learning the ropes to truly excelling. Base salary is just one part of a total compensation package that will include equity rewards, annual stipends for health and wellness, retirement savings matching, and an extended health package with fully paid premiums for body and mind. You will also have access to a dedicated talent development program that includes career coaching and opportunities for career development.

Benefits

  • A total compensation package that includes an extended health benefits package with fully paid premiums for both body and mind, matching in RRSP, TFSA or FHSA, and stock options.
  • A dedicated Talent Development team and access to coaching, learning, and leadership programs to help you grow your career, reach your goals, and unlock your full potential.
  • Unique opportunity to build, grow, and leave your impact on a $400‑billion industry that has no dominant player…yet.
  • To work with a group of people who are humble, supportive, and give a sh’t about our customers.

Equal‑Opportunity Statement

We believe that diverse teams perform better and that fostering an inclusive work environment is a key part of growing a successful team. We welcome people of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to working with applicants requesting accommodation at any stage of the hiring process.
