The Assistant Director of Care (ADOC) reports to the Director of Care (DOC) and provides operational and clinical leadership to the nursing team to ensure residents receive safe, highquality, person-centered and culturally safe care in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and O. Reg. 246/22. The ADOC partners with the DOC, interdisciplinary team leaders, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) structures to strengthen clinical practice, reduce risk, and support a respectful workplace culture.


The ADOC acts as the DOC designate as required and supports effective management of human resources, supplies, and fiscal resources, while leading change, coaching leaders, and fostering accountability for quality outcomes.


Wage Rate:


The starting annual salary is $100,000.

Responsibilities:



  • Promotes and supports the organization’s vision, mission and values

  • Model and ensure the Residents’ Bill of Rights is upheld in practice, with a personcentered lens that respects identity, culture, language, and expressed goals of care.

  • Maintains legislative compliance with all appropriate legislations; Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and Ontario Regulation 246/22, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, etc.

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to nursing leadership and registered staff to support consistent, resident-focused care practices.

  • Lead and/or oversee clinical audits, analysis of findings, corrective action plans, and sustainment monitoring (documentation, care planning, medication processes, incident trending).

  • Support development/revision/implementation of clinical policies and procedures aligned with evidence-informed practice, College of Nurses of Ontario expectations, and Ministry requirements.

  • Ensure resident rights are actively promoted and embedded in care delivery; model respectful, trauma-informed, culturally safe interactions.

  • Provide leadership oversight to ensure required programs are implemented, evaluated, improved, and complied with

  • Ensure program evaluations/audits are completed as required, documented, and translated into action plans, education, and practice change; monitor implementation and outcomes over time.

  • Facilitating regular program lead huddles to review performance indicators, gaps, and improvement priorities.

  • Provide visible leadership to support implementation of the home’s IPAC program, including audit readiness, outbreak preparedness, staff education, and continuous improvement expectations.

  • Support culturally safe IPAC approaches.

  • Collaborate with the IPAC Lead to address audit findings, implement improvements, and sustain compliance.

  • Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety expectations (hazard identification, incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions, staff education).

  • Participate in or lead workplace incident investigations (as assigned), including root cause identification and prevention plans.

  • Support readiness for external inspections/orders related to health and safety, as required, in collaboration with leadership.

  • Support development, implementation, and annual review of emergency and evacuation

  • planning; ensure staff/students/volunteers receive emergency plan training during orientation and at least annually.

  • Coach, mentor, and support Nurse Managers and Home Area Leads and registered staff in clinical leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and professional development.

  • Participate in hiring processes; support onboarding/orientation; identify learning needs and coordinate education plans.

  • Address performance concerns using documented coaching/corrective action and participate in investigations as required and support progressive discipline consistent with policy.

  • Contribute to staffing planning and scheduling oversight to support safe coverage, skill mix, and continuity of care.

  • Support budget stewardship and resource planning (supplies, equipment, education priorities) aligned with quality and risk priorities.

  • Support DOC/Executive Director in incident response, documentation quality, and required reporting processes, including critical incident escalation and corrective action follow-through (as assigned).

  • Coordinates clinical programs as directed by the Director of Care

  • Assists the Director of Care with projects and innovations and supports the Director of Care with assigned duties

  • Provides direction to the nursing team in all aspects of resident care and takes on the role of the Director of Care (DOC) in the absence of the DOC.

  • Implements, evaluates and supports new care programs and services based on best practices

  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of the resident bill of rights and monitors to ensure the rights of residents are always respected and promoted. Models a person-centered care approach.

  • Maintains legislative compliance with all appropriate legislations; Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and Ontario Regulation 246/22, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, etc.

  • Provides leadership and acts as a role model when dealing with the interdisciplinary team, residents and family conflicts

  • Acts as a mentor for Nurse Managers and Home Area Leads in the clinical areas, conflict and problem resolutions, communication, personal and professional growth

  • Conducts regular clinical chart audits to ensure compliance with documentation, standards, internal policies, procedures and legislations.

  • Assists with the development of policies and procedures consistent with resident

  • evidenced-based care practices, College of Nurses of Ontario, Ministry of Long-Term Care, and other applicable legislation

  • Meets with program leads on a regular basis to evaluate effectiveness and identify gaps

  • Facilitates Registered Staff meetings on a regular basis to introduce new programs, policies, quality improvement initiatives and changes in practice

  • Adheres to human resources policies when recruiting and hiring new employees

  • Has a good understanding of staffing patterns, and scheduling activities in scheduling software

  • In collaboration with the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, Leadership, and Resident Care Teams develops, tracks, and evaluates quality and risk indicators and is part of the annual QIP development.

  • Adheres to Occupational Health and Safety practices

  • Reports to the Ministry of Long-Term Care all critical incidents as stipulated by in the fi and Ontario Regulation 246/22 using the Critical Incident System (CIS) electronic system

  • Other duties as assigned and or indicated in Job Task Inventory


Qualifications:


The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:



  • Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse or a Registered Nurse registered with a regulatory authority in a Canadian jurisdiction, other than Ontario, and holds in that jurisdiction the equivalent of a certificate of registration authorizing independent practice in Ontario as of right exemption Bill 60

  • Minimum of one (2) years of managerial experience in a long-term care setting an asset

  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based clinical practices

  • Proficiency in electronic health records

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, motivate, lead and support team members

  • Gerontology certificate program or equivalent an asset

  • InterRAI knowledge (AIS certification preferred if not must be completed successfully within one (1) year of being hired.

  • Policy and program development

  • To show evidence of being focused on people’s feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.

  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals’ rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.

  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one

  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements

  • Two supervisory references required

  • Provide proof of all required vaccines. The Employer strongly recommends to “stay up to date” with the recommended vaccines. Vaccination requirements are subject to changes as determined by the Employer.
