Duties and Responsibilities:
This isyouropportunity tohelpshapeandsupporta thriving culture of teaching excellenceatDurhamCollegeat a moment when the future of higher education is being rewrittenby generative AI digital innovation and a rapidly evolving world to the Dean the DirectorTeaching and Learning provides visionary leadership for a multidisciplinaryteam of digital learning and teaching and learning specialists within theCentre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

TheDirectorchampionsexemplary evidence-based and future-focusedteaching practice. Working in close partnership with facultymembersAcademic Faculties and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) the Directoradvances DCs Digital Learning Strategy leads the responsible integration ofGenerative AI in teaching and learning and cultivates a scholarly innovativeteaching culture that prepares career-ready graduates for a rapidly changingworld.

This role is central toadvancing thegoals of theAcademic Plantoenhance exemplary teaching and learning practices foster a scholarly approachto teaching strengthen faculty digital fluency and continually renew our educationaltechnology and teaching resources all in service of a future-focusedcollege.

Champion a team atthe forefront:

  • Direct mentor and develop a multidisciplinary team of digital learning and teaching and learning specialistsandsecondedfaculty.
  • Provide strategic direction setting prioritiesandfostering a collaborative culture of innovation continuous improvement and pedagogical excellence to drive the priorities of the Teaching and Learning Plan 2026-2030.

Champion exemplaryteaching across every modality:

  • Guide DC faculty in deliveringhigh-qualityin-person and digital learning experiences through innovative evidence-based pedagogical practicesadvancing the Academic Plans commitment to enhancing exemplary teaching and learning and to enhancing faculty digital fluency for the ever-changing world of work.

Build a connectedcommunity of teaching excellence:

  • Leadcolleagues across the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to design and deliver a diverse portfolio of faculty supports that celebrates excellence and innovation in teaching and recognizes faculty leadership and inter-professional networks.

Serveasasenior teaching and learning expert:

  • Act as a trusted consultant to faculty members Academic Faculties and the ALT on instructional practices active learning strategies authentic assessment technology-enhanced education student engagement and academic integrity across in-person and digital learningenvironmentsensuringevery student experiences the innovative transformative education at the heart of DCs vision.

WelcomeandinspireDCs faculty:

  • Plan and deliver academic orientation (in-person and online) for all new full-time and contractfaculty.
  • Coordinate ongoing faculty development activitiesincluding monthly workshops Academic PD Day the College Teaching Certificateprogram and micro-credentials tofoster continuous professional growth.

Lead DCs digitallearning future.

  • Oversee DCs Digital Learning Strategyinvestigate and implement neweducational technologies andlead initiatives that advance the priorities of DCs Digital Learning Framework positioning the college as a globally recognized leader in innovative lifelong learning.

Shape how DCteaches with AI.

  • Partner withacademic leadershipand faculty to support the development and conversion of course content for digital delivery.
  • Thoughtfully integrate Generative AI activities and learning outcomes in alignment with established quality standardsmodelling the innovation and integrity that define DCs values.

Advance theScholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL):

  • Foster creativity and innovation that enrich student learning and enhance faculty teaching including consulting on proposed projects reviewing and approving proposals supporting researchers with project needs and dissemination of findings building the scholarly approach to teaching envisioned in the Academic Plan.

Bring innovative toolsto DC classrooms:

  • Identify evaluate implement and support innovative digital and AI-enabled tools that continually renew DCs learning spaces educational technology and teaching and learning resources.

Support curriculum management end-to-end:

  • Collaborate with theAcademic Quality team the Registrars Office and Academic Faculties onthe integration ongoing development and maintenance of the curriculummanagement system (Coursedog) contributing to the development review andrenewal of high-quality programs that reflect evolving box societaland workforce needs

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Mastersdegree in educationorrelatedfieldfrom a recognized post-secondary institution(focus on adult or higher educationteaching and learning curriculum digital/online teaching and learning and/or science of learningis considered an asset). A PhD is an asset.
  • Minimum of7yearsofmanagement experience in higher education;
  • Minimum of5years ofproven excellence ininstructionalpractice in adult or higher education;
  • Minimumof 5years experience in budget management
  • Deep understandingoftraditional and digitalpedagogy/andragogy the science of learningand best practices in teaching and learning in higher education includingactive andauthentic learningassessment strategies andstudent engagement in all modes of delivery (face-to-face hybridand online);
  • Deepunderstanding ofthe integration of educational technology and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in teaching and learning;
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing new technology in higher education includingsourcing comprehensive reviewprocurement budget implementation planning and managementtrainingand support resource development;
  • Ability to supportand advanceteaching and learning in adiverseeducational environment;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Confident presentation skills and experiencewith group facilitation anddeveloping leadingand deliveringprofessional developmentworkshops and/or tutorials;
  • Provenpeople and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity diversity and inclusion in all matters related to students staffing and programming.
