Job description

Company Description

Metroland Media is a dynamic media powerhouse, delivering vital news to millions of readers across Ontario. We publish six award-winning daily newspapers – including the Hamilton Spectator and Waterloo Region Record – alongside 27 websites covering communities from Ottawa Valley to Niagara and Parry Sound to Toronto.

We don’t just report the news; we strengthen our communities. Our newsrooms fuse the expertise of our trained journalists with first-party data and local insights, keeping citizens informed on the issues that matter most.

Join us to learn from seasoned journalists and make a real impact in Ontario.

Our Commitment to Diversity

We strive to be a leader in building and cultivating an employee community framed around fairness, support and opportunity. We believe that what makes us different, makes a difference. And as a team, the diversity of our backgrounds, interests and experiences is what enriches our work, and our workplaces. We welcome all, and we strive for an inclusive culture that allows individual growth and shared success.

Job Description

Toronto.com is seeking a curious, creative, and energetic lifestyle and culture reporter to join its Toronto.com team for a one-year internship.

This 12-month contract is designed to be a launchpad for your career, immersing you in a real-world newsroom and providing you with meaningful hands-on reporting experience to build your portfolio.

While Toronto.com operates virtually, working within a specific community requires a reporter to live nearby.

What You Will Do

  • Work directly with editors and full-time staff to produce original, high-quality, trustworthy journalism for our communities.
  • Provide boots-on-the-ground coverage of the community by attending events and conducting interviews in person.
  • Assist with social media posting and community engagement on Instagram and TikTok as needed.
  • Stay curious about emerging local trends and actively explore new happenings across the city to share with the team.
  • Participate in our established training program to develop your reporting and research abilities in a supportive environment.
  • Attend virtual and in-person team meetings and actively contribute to content planning discussions.
  • Monitor social media and community networks to identify trending local stories.

Qualifications

  • You must be a current or graduating post-secondary student who is eligible to work in Ontario.
  • Annual internship runs from September 2026 to August 2027.
  • You must be able to work full-time hours, which may include weekend, evening and statutory holiday shifts, for the entire program.
  • You must have access to reliable personal transportation.
  • This role is represented by Unifor Local 87-M.
  • Please note: We cannot accommodate volunteers, short-term placements, or co-op students.

How to apply

To apply, upload a single PDF in the resume field to our online portal containing:

  • A cover letter that sets you apart: In 100 words or less, tell us what you bring to Toronto.com. Why you? Why now?
  • One original story pitch tailored to our audience. The pitch must have a maximum 150-word summary of the angle and at least one source to be interviewed. Ensure the pitch conforms to Canadian Press (CP) Style.
  • Resume.
  • Three published examples of news or feature reporting journalism:
    • Links must be accessible (no paywalls).
    • Clips from campus newspapers or independent/community outlets are welcome but blog posts, opinion pieces or academic essays are not.

Application should demonstrate the energy and passion for local news that makes you a good fit for Toronto.com.

Deadline to apply: August 3, 2026

We would like to thank all applicants for their interest in this program; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

You are

  • Overflowing with curiosity.
  • Passionate about local news and well-versed in Canadian Press Style.
  • Motivated, organized and able to juggle multiple deadlines effectively.
  • Comfortable with social media tools and digital storytelling formats.
  • Able to build professional relationships easily with colleagues and community members.
  • Capable of working effectively in a hybrid environment — collaborating remotely and travelling within the community for assignments.
