Job description
  • University graduation in recreation administration Community Development Education Public Health Community Development Social Work or other relevant programs
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible community development experience including demonstrated competency in asset based community development facilitation and organizational development

Assets:

  • Demonstrated understanding and skill in intercultural awareness and engagement
  • Experience supporting community-based recreation programs parkland development and project management public engagement community action plans and leadership development
  • Knowledge of Asset Based Community Development community building and capacity building/mobilization
  • Second spoken language

Skills required for success:

  • Strong strategic planning and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and sustain goal-directed relationships networks and partnerships
  • Strong project management and facilitation skills
  • Working knowledge and experience with non-profit governance accountability and effectiveness
  • Creativity and innovation to inspire new approaches to addressing issues and opportunities
  • Superior interpersonal skills and social intelligence with the ability to collaborate and integrate with diverse interested parties
  • Ability to negotiate roles and responsibilities shared between the position and interested parties
  • Superior spoken and written communication skills (provide presentations facilitate workshops write reports and other documents)
  • Political financial and community leadership acumen
  • Understanding of project management processes and recording results
  • Ability to design approaches that are respectful and maximize inclusion and community participation
  • Excellent time management skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states

Neighbourhood Services delivers the Citys Community Capacity Building Service bringing the City Plans values and outcomes to life. We specialize in community development building social and human capital and assisting communities in collaborating to create excellent places to live in our neighbourhoods. Our mission is to enable people to build and belong to communities that matter. This pivotal role strengthens social capital by building capacity across our diverse network of neighbourhoods and districts. What will you do

  • Be central to community development by convening connecting leveraging and brokering resources to build social capital
  • For assigned neighbourhoods monitor and address emerging opportunities and issues leading asset-based community development capacity support and serving as a neighbourhood content expert
  • Link groups with City departments and services assist residents in contributing to a shared neighbourhood vision and support community-led projects
  • Use diverse engagement methods to ensure fairness gather opinions from various groups and create opportunities for all residents to actively participate in community life
  • Facilitate strategic planning initiatives that empower citizen-led projects and address local needs
  • Nurture collaborations between community organizations City departments and other interested parties to achieve mutually agreed-upon outcomes
  • Strategically support community led infrastructure development Providing
  • Offer guidance on grant programs funding opportunities and program support for community ideas projects and initiatives
  • Identify and interpret City resources including policies and bylaws
  • Continuously analyze and respond to arising community challenges and opportunities
  • Pinpoint community needs capacities and assets to support local leadership development
  • Research pilot and implement innovative strategies to create streamlined and high-quality services
  • Connect residents community groups and City Administration to address local opportunities and issues fostering a collaborative environment
  • Play a vital role in stewarding parkland and public spaces through neighbourhood event licensing and community led construction programs promoting social connection and enhancing the overall well-being of our communities
  • Perform other duties as assigned
