Job description

Are you an experienced Technical Writer with adequate knowledge of the field? This role maybe a good fit for you.

Position Summary

As part of the AJISS Coastal Support team, the Technical Specification Writer will support the Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) class vessels managed by Thales under the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) contract. Accountable to the Resource Manager – Coastal Support but responsive to the Coastal Engineering Services Manager, the Technical Specification Writer supports the Service Delivery and Engineering teams with writing specifications and Statement of Work (SOWs) for corrective maintenance for various systems and equipment. This will include ensuring that Class Societies and objective quality evidence (OQE), amongst others, are duly captured. In this role, the incumbent frequently liaises with various stakeholders including ships staff and Fleet Maintenance Facilities (FMF) work centers.

Core hours 8am–4pm local (some flexibility)

Clearance: Reliability, CGP, or Trade to start (NATO Secret can be in progress)

Responsibilities
Electrical Engineering:

· Developing and reviewing electrical and electronic system technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions;

· Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including but not limited to investigating equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, and disposal management;

· Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability;

· Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with electrical system, equipment and/or software issues, including root cause analyses, risk assessments and solution development;

· Manage the preparation of electrical design change documentation including manufacturing drawings, maintenance and installation instructions, and test and trials documentation;

· Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software;

· Conducting electrical load design calculations;

· Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates;

· Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as Original Equipment Manufacturers, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;

· Developing engineering plans, processes and procedures related to combat systems as well as ship based software; and

· Defining, developing and maintaining software configuration documentation.

Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications

· 3-year technical diploma program in a mechanical field offered by a recognized technical institute

· Certified as a technologist by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (National) licensing body in a relevant mechanical field

· Certified as one of the following marine technical trades of the Canadian Armed Forces:

a. RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2 Marine Technician

b. QL 6A or 7 Marine Engineer

· Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years

· Familiarity with workplace health and safety requirements, in particular LOTO, Hot Work and Confined Space procedures

· Previous experience or working with the Royal Canadian Navy / Canadian Coast Guard

· Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset

· DRMIS experience is an asset.

Top 3 Skills:

Technical diploma in a mechanical field
3 years of technical professional work experience (marine industry preferred but not mandatory); knowledge in maintenance, operation, design, and/or troubleshooting
Familiarity with workplace health and safety requirements, especially LOTO, Hot Work, and Confined Space procedures (highly preferred)
Interview via Teams, panel style
