The Edmonton Police Service requires one (1) Evidence Recovery Technician to fulfill a critical role in the Crime Scenes Investigation this position you will conduct forensic examination of exhibits and vehicles to develop identify document and preserve forensic evidence. This will include photographs fingerprints and DNA collection. You will play a critical role in capturing and preserving crucial forensic evidence supporting criminal investigations.

The successful candidates responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct forensic examinations of exhibits and vehicles submitted to the Crime Scene Investigation Section (CSIS) using a variety of techniques to develop identify document and preserve physical evidence.
  • Capture and process forensic photography including image optimization and preparation of detailed photo packages suitable for investigative and court purposes. Maintain accurate and detailed notes to support evidentiary standards.
  • Perform presumptive testing on physical evidence including testing for the presence of blood (Hemastix) gunshot residue (GSR) and lead (LeadCheck).
  • Assist with exhibit examinations including the collection and processing of fingerprints DNA and other physical evidence and provide support to police officers both in laboratory settings and where required at crime scenes.
  • Utilize and maintain records within local provincial and national investigative databases and systems (e.g. CPIC JOIN ORCA) including searching inputting and retrieving forensic information.
  • Prepare clear concise and objective forensic reports documenting examination processes and findings for investigative and court use and provide expert testimony in court as required.
  • Coordinate and manage laboratory submissions including preparing requests submitting exhibits and tracking and distributing results related to DNA tool mark physical match and IBIS forensic testing.
  • Prepare specialized reports and documentation related to forensic examinations including DNA-related reports and materials supporting criminal investigations and court proceedings.
  • Review and comply with court orders and disclosure requirements including the preparation and handling of court-related documentation and certificates.
  • Maintain workflow and task coordination within the Record Management System (RMS) including assigning and tracking tasks associated with forensic files and exhibits.
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new members assigned to CSIS.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • The completion of a two (2) year Community College Law Enforcement Diploma or related with a minimum of two years of experience in fingerprint processing. Successful Completion of the Forensic Identification Course developed by the authorized employer and approved by the Director of Law Enforcement Solicitor General and Public Safety.
  • These Evidence Recovery Technicians will be required to obtain Community Peace Officer level II status as they will be required to work under the authority of a peace officer.
  • Working knowledge of the Criminal Code including DNA-designated offences as well as the Identification of Criminals Act FOIP Act and Alberta Peace Officer Act.
  • Knowledge of Fingerprint Classification Systems and latent print development techniques used to recover forensic evidence.
  • Working knowledge of forensic laboratory equipment including current OHS WHMIS and MSDS standards and safe handling procedures related to firearms ammunition and exhibits contaminated with high-potency narcotics or unknown substances.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with court orders and support legal and evidentiary requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in processing forensic information and documentation.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including the preparation of clear and concise documentation.
  • Ability to maintain detailed and moderately complex records ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Proficiency with computer software and data systems with the ability to learn new applications and perform precise data entry requiring a high level of manual dexterity and sustained focus.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands manage interruptions and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment where workload may be unpredictable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position including working in confined spaces standing for prolonged periods and performing physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers License and valid for five (5) years. Must complete a City Drivers License application.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Community Peace Officer Level II status.
  • The successful candidate must successfully complete the in-house 8-week Forensic Identification Course developed by the authorized employer and approved by the Director of Law Enforcement Solicitor General and Public Safety where such training has not already been obtained OR through experience as determined by the employer based on qualifications and experience.
  • Annual and ongoing training and assessments related to the forensics discipline.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Hours of work are assigned based on operational requirements and may include days evenings nights weekends and statutory holidays.

Salary Range: 21B Salary Grade 024 $41.17 - $51.44 (Hourly) $3294.20 - $4115.50 (Bi-Weekly) $85977.58 - $107415.07 (Annually)
