Job description
Market Environmental

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

When it comes to environmental consulting, we’re helping our clients protect our world’s natural resources. Pave the way for your career with a company that inspires and empowers you to deliver your best work so you can evolve, grow, and succeed—today and into tomorrow. You'll impact the world around you by helping us solve real-life challenges.

Based out of Burnaby, other areas in the Lower Mainland or BC Interior, Calgary, or Edmonton, you’ll join our Aquatics Team and work as part of multidisciplinary project teams to contribute directly to the baseline environmental planning, permitting, and construction efforts of government and privately owned infrastructure projects throughout Western Canada. As an Intermediate Aquatics Biologist, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and mentoring field crews for surveys supporting all project phases from permitting, baseline assessments, construction, and post-construction monitoring.

This position will start immediately with an anticipated 80% of travel for fieldwork and 20% office work. A successful offer will be full-time or a 12-month contract depending on workload and/or skillset. Contracts have the potential of extension or conversion to full-time.

Required safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided by Jacobs.

Bring your enthusiasm for learning and desire to work with a multidisciplinary team of technical experts, and we’ll help you grow!

Here's what you'll need
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in biology or other environmental related education, primarily related to freshwater fish or aquatic-related studies.
  • Hold or be eligible for RPBio for BC, P.Biol. for Alberta, or other professional designation or equivalent that denotes you as a Qualified Environment Professional in BC or AB. Biologist in Training may be considered.
  • At least 5 years of experience leading aquatic-related field studies, reviewing field data, managing crews in remote settings, and liaising with client field contacts, with an emphasis on fish and fish habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, fish sampling, snorkel surveys, and fish salvage and relocation.
  • At least 3 years of experience in environmental consulting related to Canadian aquatic resources and water resources permitting, or relevant comparable experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Fisheries Act and provincial and federal environmental legislation, primarily in western Canada.
  • Willingness to work in the field in remote locations for up to 2 or 3 weeks at a time and overnight at hotels and project work camps.
  • Physical ability to work safely and be comfortable in and around fast-flowing and deep-water systems.
  • Must have a driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Experience working with a diverse range of clients across multiple sectors.
  • Experience viewing and/or collecting field data using a mobile app (ex: Esri Field Maps or Survey 123)
  • Experience viewing and/or reviewing digitally collected field data in a web-browser or desktop-based digital solution
  • Valid Electro-fishing certificate approved by Worksafe BC.
  • Experience driving 4x4 trucks on remote and gravel roads, and experience with UTVs, boats, and hauling trailers.
  • Experience or interest in supporting other biophysical study areas such as wetlands, rare plants, weeds, wildlife, and/or environmental monitoring or inspection.
