The Director of Transportation provides strategic and operational leadership for transportation across a regional network. This role is accountable for optimizing cost-to-serve, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering reliable service performance while leading teams and managing carrier and fleet operations.
This role oversees a team of leaders, executes strategy at the regional level, and drives cross-functional results.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead regional transportation strategy execution to optimize cost, service, and operational performance
- Oversee fleet operations and third-party carrier relationships, including contract negotiation and performance management
- Partner with Distribution Operations, Customer Service, Finance, HR, Legal, and Quality to drive aligned outcomes
- Ensure compliance with all transportation regulations and company policies
- Own and manage the regional transportation budget, identifying opportunities to improve cost-to-serve and financial performance
- Drive implementation of national transportation initiatives and ensure alignment with customer delivery expectations
- Establish and monitor KPIs related to cost, service, and network performance
- Lead and develop a team of managers and individual contributors, fostering a high-performance, engaged culture
- Act as an escalation point for complex operational issues impacting service, cost, or delivery performance
- Translate strategic priorities into actionable plans and ensure successful execution across the region
- Travel up to 20%
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive experience in transportation, logistics, or distribution, including leadership experience
- Proven experience managing transportation operations, carriers, and cost-to-serve performance
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and driving cost efficiency
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and lead cross-functional initiatives
Preferred:
- Post-graduate certification (e.g., CITT)
- Experience in regulated industries (e.g., pharmaceutical distribution)
- Direct-to-store delivery (DSD) or last-mile transportation experience
- Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and routing optimization tools
- Experience in fleet management and carrier sourcing
- Bilingual (English/French) an asset
