Our wealth of operational experience, rigorous quality assurance processes, and outstanding workmanship have made us one of the most trusted contractors in the industry.

We are actively seeking professional Red Seal Powerline Technicians who take pride in their workmanship, are committed to ongoing development, and foster strong, respectful working relationships in the field.

Position Summary

VIP Powerline is hiring a Journeyman Powerline Technician (PLT) with proven experience in overhead and underground energized distribution and transmission systems ranging from 12kV to 230kV.

As a skilled tradesperson, you will play a key role in the safe construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical power systems. This position requires strong technical capability, safety leadership, quality accountability, and the ability to maintain productive working relationships with clients, inspectors, and crew members while delivering high-performance results.

Key Responsibilities

Construction & Maintenance

  • Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems (12kV-230kV).

  • Perform energized work in accordance with approved utility standards, safe work procedures, and company policies.

  • Install and maintain poles, anchors, guying systems, insulators, transformers, switches, regulators, and associated hardware.

  • Perform cable pulling, splicing, terminations, testing, and troubleshooting of underground systems.

  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment including bucket trucks, digger derricks, tensioners, and associated line tools.

  • Read and interpret construction drawings, switching orders, and technical specifications accurately.

  • Perform switching, isolation, and worker protection grounding in accordance with approved work methods.

Safety Leadership

  • Lead by example in promoting and maintaining VIP Powerline’s strong safety culture.

  • Ensure strict adherence to minimum approach distances, lockout/tagout procedures, worker protection grounding, fall protection, and other critical life-saving rules.

  • Conduct and actively participate in tailboard meetings, hazard assessments, and job briefings.

  • Proactively identify hazards and implement effective risk mitigation strategies in dynamic field environments.

  • Mentor apprentices and crew members in safe work practices and technical skill development.

  • Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, utility standards, and internal safety policies.

Quality Management

  • Deliver workmanship that meets or exceeds client specifications and industry standards.

  • Conduct field-level quality checks to ensure installations are compliant, complete, and properly documented.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation including daily reports, equipment logs, switching records, and as-builts.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, inspectors, engineers, and client representatives to ensure clarity of scope and expectations.

  • Take full ownership of assigned work to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard.

Collaboration & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, inspectors, and utility representatives.

  • Foster a One Team environment grounded in accountability, respect, and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to a professional, solution-focused, and performance-driven work culture.

Qualifications

  • Interprovincial Red Seal Powerline Technician Certification.

  • 3-5+ years of experience working on energized overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems.

  • Valid Class 3 or Class 1 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.

  • Demonstrated competency in live-line and rubber glove methods.

  • Strong knowledge of utility construction standards, safety regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Vancouver Island and surrounding Gulf Islands, as required.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring abilities.

What We Offer

  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.

  • A well-established, safety-driven organization with clear performance expectations.

  • Opportunities for career advancement and leadership growth.

  • A One Team culture driven by integrity, accountability, and pride in our craft.
