Who We Are

Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

Serving students, staff, faculty and our wider community across all three campuses, the VPFA (Vice President Finance and Administration) leads and develops foundational support services to help achieve SFU’s academic, research and community engagement missions. We deliver SFU’s day-to-day operational and administrative needs through the work of Campus Services; Facilities Services; Finance; IT Services; and Safety & Risk Services. We collaboratively, respectfully and inclusively engage and work with our community partners to meet the needs of and make a difference in the everyday lives of the people we serve, in addition to creating a vibrant work culture of learning and growth for our over 600 staff.

Campus Services is composed of seven departments that provide core services to students, faculty, staff and external community. Through Meeting, Event & Conference Services; Food; Bookstore & Spirit Shop; Parking & Sustainable Mobility Services; Document Solutions; Residence and Housing; SFU Childcare Society; and a variety of experience programs, Campus Services strives to create vibrant, engaging and welcoming spaces across all three SFU campuses.

About the Role

The Group Leader provides day-to-day guidance and support and organizes and monitors the work of the Event Planners and Event Assistants to ensure consistency in service delivery and adherence to MECS event coordination standards, while coordinating, identifying, analyzing and scheduling incoming workflow priorities for the unit. The position is responsible for the coordination and smooth operation of all internal and external events that take place at the various campuses. The Group Lead monitors and troubleshoots the work of the Event Planners and Event Assistants for all problems that might occur in the successful running of an event. The incumbent is required to be flexible and able to act at a moment's notice to solve problems by coordinating with other departments, catering services and external providers. The position also prepares and provides one-on-one training to Event Planners and establishes work priorities for the unit. Under the direction of the Supervisor, the incumbent is required to tailor specific events to appropriate locations within the facility, making sure that the most efficient use of space and resources is used. The incumbent is also required to liaise with security, technical and other service areas when booking space. Because of the diverse nature of the clients that use the various campuses, this position needs to be sensitive to both their needs and those of our academic community, who regularly schedule events on this campus.

Qualifications

High School graduation and one year of post-secondary education or a formal program equivalent. General courses or training of moderate duration (one semester or equivalent) in word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications. 4 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

  • Ability to use event management software/customer relationship management software applications (e.g., Momentus) at an intermediate level.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.

What We Offer

At SFU, our goal is to ensure our people are valued and supported by promoting a healthy work-life balance, professional growth and development, as well as a safe and respectful workplace. We offer temporary employees who belong in the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE Local 3338):

  • An additional 14% pay in lieu of benefits
  • After 4 consecutive months in the position, pay in lieu of benefits is increased to 20%
