The Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences Program (iBioMed) is seeking to hire 1 enthusiastic and highly engaged Instructional Assistant Intern (IAI) for IBEHS 1P10.
The role of the IAI is to apply both technical and practical skills in the delivery of the course curriculum for IBEHS 1P10 as well as the delivery of lab and tutorial course components.
Specifically, this entails : 1) reviewing and adjusting course materials as needed, 2) reviewing and testing validation tools and equipment, 3) teaching both lab and tutorial content, 4) serving in a leadership role through supervision of a large team of teaching assistants, and 5) acting as both a mentor and role model for IBEHS 1P10 students by helping to bridge their successful transition from high school to university.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in the delivery of McMaster’s iBioMed Program through the delivery of its foundational design course.
For the successful candidate, this is a valuable opportunity to apply technical skills in engineering and health sciences (e.
g., design, CAD, computing, etc.), develop important practical skills in communication, management and teamwork; all skills that are critical for long-term success in the workforce.
The successful incumbent will assist the instructor in collecting and synthesizing Graduate Attribute materials and relevant data for the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) process.
PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING COMPETENCIES :

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Collaborating with course instructors to develop and finalize course materials pertaining to lecture, lab, tutorials and design projects
- Validate design projects through prototyping and the development of validation tools and equipment
- Instruct first year students through weekly tutorials and labs using both lectures and interactive group work
- Mentor students and provide support in their successful transition through first year by facilitating online discussion forums, promptly reply to emails, and holding weekly office hours to address course-related questions and concerns
- Guide student groups through open-ended problems by providing appropriate feedback that takes them from problem identification and concept generation to a final working prototype
- Coordinate assignment-related and project-related tasks, including test invigilation, organization students into groups, and developing sample solutions
- Lead a large team of teaching assistants by scheduling regular meetings, providing regular training on the use of appropriate software, assigning tasks, and coordinating grading duties
- Facilitate the organization of the online course-management-system’s course content, which includes distribution of course materials and inputting of online grades
- Stay current with new technologies and materials that pertain to the course and, where appropriate, suggest how they can be implemented towards continuously improving the course moving forward
- Maintain confidentiality of information
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Currently registered in a Bachelor’s degree program in Engineering from McMaster University, or equivalent
- Successful completion of ENGINEER 1C03 (Engineering Design & Graphics), ENGINEER 1D04 (Engineering Computation) and ENGINEER 1P03 (Engineering Practice & Profession), or IBEHS 1P10 (Health Solutions Design Projects I), or ENGINEER 1P13 (Integrated Cornerstone Design Projects in Engineering) or equivalent.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 7.0; significant experience could be considered in place of this requirement
- Previous experience in Autodesk Inventor (or similar CAD software) and Python (or similar programming language) outside of IBEHS 1P10, ENGINEER 1C03 and ENGINEER 1D04 is considered an asset
- Demonstrated interest in the biomedical field is desirable
ADDITIONAL DETAILS :
- LENGTH OF CO-OP WORK TERM : 8-months, beginning August 26th, 2024
- WAGE : $30.48 / hr, 35 hours per week
