Pay Grade: 6 level 1 ($118,014.44 annually, plus $8,420 salary differential per year)

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Coordinator, WCB/LTD Appeals, the incumbent is responsible for providing leadership to the WCB/LTD Officers and administrative staff. The incumbent will assist in the day-to-day management of the team and provide workload relief as needed and/or management of complex files. This includes leading the team or others in advancing appeal processes for BCNU members or connecting with members to assist in problem solving the issues. May represent the organization at various committees as deemed applicable by the Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Is able to perform all duties of a WCB/LTD Officer, which includes but is not limited to providing advice on and interpretation of collective agreement provisions, government legislation changes, benefit provider changes and developing the skills and knowledge of the WCB/LTD team.
  • Provides leadership, advice, and guidance to WCB/LTD Officers and administrative staff to assist in management of complex cases, to facilitate organizational priorities and set necessary daily work plans, and escalates issues as required.
  • Provides training, coaching, and mentoring to new and existing staff within their team.
  • Manages escalation of files through the appeal processes.
  • Advises the Coordinator of issues or concerns regarding workload and staff performance. Provides constructive performance feedback to officers and administrative staff.
  • In collaboration with the Coordinator, may assist to adjust workloads and assignments within the team.
  • Fosters collaborative working relationships to gather information, determine needs, and support the ongoing development of staff. Encourages a positive and collaborative labour relations environment.
  • Builds relationships with relevant parties through engagement with members, stewards, and leadership to gather information and support the team.
  • Assists the Coordinator with project work as well as with day-to-day operational activities.
  • Recommends improvements on day-to-day procedures to the Coordinator and implements changes if approved.
  • Ensures consistency of practices amongst officers and administrative staff.
  • May assist with chairing committees, developing reports, and keeping elected officers or Labour Relations Officers informed of significant issues arising in their regions.
  • Performs other additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • College or university education in an approved Social Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety/Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Relations, Legal and/or Nursing program or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Current experience and demonstrated competency in WCB and LTD claims or appeals. Practical interpretation and application of collective agreement language. Thorough knowledge of occupational illnesses and diseases and the Workers’ Compensation system and long-term disability system and appeals processes.
  • Excellent technical skills regarding researching cases, preparing written submissions, identifying trends, and representing workers in oral hearings.
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for developing, supervising, and providing leadership to a team. Comfortable acting as a direct resource and facilitating open, respectful dialogue. Supervisory skills with formal training preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Fluency and skill in managing conflict. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build relationships and trust within the team and across all levels of the organization. Positive experience in dealing with other departments, management staff, and elected officers.
  • Knowledge of coaching and mentoring practices and how to give effective feedback. Ability to support and motivate team members to improve performance and achieve organizational goals.
  • An understanding of change management in order to recommend improvements and oversee approved change initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nurses’ employment issues and the general environmental conditions of nursing. A thorough understanding of and commitment to trade union philosophy and public health care.
  • A willingness to travel throughout the province on short notice and a valid driver’s license.
