Job Description

The School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position of Integrated Composition, Music Technology and Theory, to commence July 1st, 2024.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The ideal candidate will develop an active research and / or creative profile. They will contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs in composition and music technology, as well as to curriculum needs in theory for all of our BMus and BA Music programming.

With recent updates to our programs, the UVIC School of Music has renewed its commitment to experimental composition across a variety of genres, instruments, and mediums.

The School has also revised aspects of the curriculum to promote training in compositional techniques across a wide variety of genres and time periods.

To these ends, the ideal candidate will embrace diverse and inclusive approaches to sonic creation and will offer courses relevant to the intersection or incorporation of technology and music that complement and expand UVIC’s existing strengths, all while engaging with and responding to new student interests in computer music research, creative coding, maker / DIY culture, live electronics, multimedia practices, sound design, and audio production.

The successful candidate will engage in creative and / or research activity, will teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and will contribute administratively to School, Faculty, and University-level service.

Primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to teach aspects of both the core composition and core theory sequences (BMUS and BA), graduate instruction (MMUS and MTEC), and aid in the coordination of the Composition and Theory and Music Technology programs.

Secondary responsibilities may include further development of composition and theory course options in relation to music technology and the Combined Program in Music and Computer Science.

The candidate will also have the opportunity to bring their own musical voice, experience, and perspectives to established School of Music programs.

Beyond core courses, teaching assignments will align with the candidate’s expertise and knowledge and will be assigned by the Director of School of Music in collaboration with the candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have received a Ph.D. or DMA in music composition or theory or music technology by August 2024, will have a research and / or creative profile in one or more of these areas, and will have experience teaching at the university or college level.

ABD candidates will be considered.

The ideal candidate will be an effective and dynamic teacher committed to the ethos of experimentation, innovation, and conceptual rigour in the School of Music’s Composition and Theory program and have the ability to bridge historical and contemporary practice, demonstrating a broad array of perspectives and methodologies.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research examines technological mediation in 20th and 21st century musical practice across multiple styles.

Strength in vernacular, and / or non-Western music, sound and media-based practices as well as expertise in any additional cross-discipline program areas will be considered an asset.

Additionally, qualified candidates will espouse a commitment to pedagogical innovation, and inclusive approaches to teaching, curriculum, and assessment by demonstrating an ability to teach a diverse student body with a range of perspectives, experiences, and cultures.

SALARY

The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,276 - $126,341
