Duties

Electrical engineering services in the Engineering Department of a Canadian Coast Guard ship in support of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and other government departments programs.

Key Activities

  • Plans and executes the maintenance and repair of the electrical components of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
  • Monitors the main propulsion electrical / electronic controls during maneuvering periods in confined, restricted or shallow water areas.
  • Assists in the creation, modification and / or upgrading of electrical / electronic equipment on board.
  • Participates in regulatory authority inspections.
  • Participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
  • Provides technical advice to the Chief Engineer and other vessel personnel on electrical matters.
  • Compiles and recommends electronic refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract work required for the upkeep of the vessel and oversees contractors and electricians.
  • Makes recommendations to the Chief Engineer regarding the engine room's electrical materiel resource needs.
  • Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff positions on an indeterminate, term, casual or acting basis.

Indeterminate (permanent) employment may be available once candidates are hired and have obtained Coast Guard Certification.

EDUCATION

Possession of a valid Electrical Engineering Technology Certificate

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

English essential

  • Valid CCG Certificate of Competency*, Electrical Officer
  • Candidates who do not possess a valid CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer may also apply to this process.

Candidates meeting all essential qualifications except for occupational certification will be added to a partially qualified inventory.

At any time during the validity period of the inventory, a candidate in the partially qualified inventory can produce a valid CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer and may be placed in the fully qualified inventory.

Only candidates in the fully qualified inventory are eligible for indeterminate appointment resulting from this process.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS :

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

  • Possession of a valid Marine Emergency Duty certificate STCW Basic Safety (MED A1 and B2)
  • Possession of valid Marine Emergency Duty certificate Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (MED B1)
  • Possession of valid Marine Emergency Duty certificate Advanced Firefighting (MED C)
  • Possession of a valid CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience as an Electrical Officer trainee onboard a CCG vessel.
  • Experience as an Electrical Officer onboard a CCG vessel.
  • Six (6) months of work experience as a Marine Electrical Officer aboard a vessel or marine platform

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS :

Membership in one of the designated Employment Equity Groups

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

  • Valid Health Canada Medical for seagoing personnel.
  • Maintain a valid Certificate of Competency.
  • Requirement to go to sea for prolonged periods of time and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Requirement to wear and maintain a uniform, safety footwear, and personal protective equipment to Canadian Coast Guard standards.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime as required.
  • Willingness to be deployed within the Atlantic Region.
  • Compliance with the Canadian Coast Guard Safety Management System and Standards.
  • Adherence to the Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions).
  • Must be willing and able to travel by air, land or by sea.
