The Opportunity

The Associate Director, IT/S is responsible for supporting the daily operations of information technology services within a unionized environment, with direct supervision of teams being phased in over time. This position oversees diverse teams including development, application support, infrastructure, networking, helpdesk, cybersecurity, and audio/visual technical services.

Responsibilities include managing both third-party and internally maintained infrastructure and applications that support business processes across the organization, as well as assisting with IT/S financial operations such as contracts, payments, budgeting, and forecasting.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Director, IT/S, below are some key accountabilities:

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Director, Chief Information Officer and IT/S teams to ensure projects and operations are staffed according to needs and available resources, and that projects transition to operational status smoothly and on time.
  • Ensure that information security remains a priority in all activities and services.
  • Manage the daily activities of team members involved in the support and delivery of services, ensuring adequate staff coverage, and including longer range capacity planning.
  • Ensure end-user communication is a priority for service outages, system upgrades, service improvements, service implementation, and service retirements.
  • Work directly with vendors, contractors and service providers, providing oversight and budget management.
  • Establish and enforce standards for change management, problem management and technical support, participating in the development and implementation of formalized policies and procedures.
  • Assist in managing the IT/S financial responsibilities including updating the budget and forecast based on direction from the Director and CIO.
  • Evaluate new technologies and platforms to determine alignment with Banff Centre business needs, while remaining flexible to business needs and changes.
  • Manage response to alerts and notifications of after-hours activity; be available after-hours as required.
  • Analyze and solve problems and make effective decisions. Escalate more complex matters to Director as needed.

Human Resources, Team Building and Interdivisional Cooperation

  • Foster an internal culture that maintains the highest standards for customer service, excellence of employees, participant and guest experience, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.
  • Ensure a positive and safe work environment for all team members aligned with Banff Centre’s policies.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with team members, internal partners, customers, the union and other stakeholders.
  • Enable employees to function as a high performing team at all times, maintaining open communication, clear objectives and priorities, and a culture of positive behavioral intent that is consistent and in alignment with Banff Centre values and is welcoming and inclusive, supporting a diverse workforce.
  • Ensure team members represent Banff Centre to any stakeholders and constituents in an informed, helpful, and positive way, striving to increase the organization’s public value in each interaction.
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor team members, assigning work, and measuring performance in relation to the strategic standards of excellence and goals. Work closely with the Human Resources Team to ensure policies, procedures, contractual, legislative and work culture expectations are met.
  • Facilitate ongoing communication with all colleagues at all levels in the organization ensuring individual and team behaviours are in alignment with organizational values.
  • Ensure that employees fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance standards and provide ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching and support as employees strive to achieve expectations.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • A university degree in related discipline or equivalent in experience
  • 7 - 10 years’ experience in directly managing operations and operational teams for service desk, networking, servers and applications support.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Ability to provide Tier 2/3 technical support and guidance to IT/S staff.
  • Demonstrated experience balancing resources to budget.
  • Very strong knowledge of Microsoft products, particularly Entra ID, Office 365, SharePoint, Windows, AD.
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure components such as AD, DNS, GPO, patching, and backups.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing teams using skills to foster motivation, respect, collaboration, partnerships and drive performance.
  • Strong communications skills used to build relationships and interact with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience negotiating and managing third party vendors.
  • Financial management and planning experience.
  • Organizational skills used to effectively manage an environment with competing demands and expectations.

Employment Terms and Benefits

  • accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The salary range for this position is $82,455 - $122,451 based on experience.
  • The successful candidate will enjoy twenty paid vacation days and four personal days annually, extended medical and dental benefits, and participation in an employer-matched pension plan.
