Director & Product Actuary, Retail Actuarial
Location : Hybrid - Kingston or Toronto
Empire Life is looking to hire a Product Actuary with pricing experience in the Canadian Individual Life insurance market to join our Retail Actuarial team.
The Product Actuary is responsible for the actuarial pricing, profitability and risk analysis of Retail’s insurance products.
An expert on all actuarial elements of the product life cycle (including pricing, reserving, capital management, modelling and risk analysis), the position will be responsible for ensuring sound pricing practices for Retail’s Individual Life and Health new business portfolio.
The position is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the general direction of the Vice President, Retail Actuarial and Finance.

What you’ll be working on
- Lead the pricing analysis, modelling and performance monitoring of Retail’s Individual Life and Health new business portfolio.
- Act as a key member of Retail’s Product Development team collaborating with other areas of Retail (Product & Marketing teams, Operations teams) to review new product opportunities and changes to existing products.
- Present pricing and risk management recommendations to Retail senior management teams.
- Act as actuarial subject matter expert on in-force product reviews.
- Supervision and coordination of Retail Actuarial employees’ product development work.
- Act as a key liaison with reinsurance partners to support ongoing product development of Retail’s Individual Life and Health new business portfolio.
- Ensure all pricing activities are compliant with relevant corporate policies.
- Collaborate with other areas of Empire Life; Insurance Response Team, Retail Insurance Marketing, Retail Operations, Risk Management and Corporate Actuarial.
What we’re looking for you to have
- Completion of FSA and / or FCIA designation
- 8-10 years of relevant work experience in actuarial roles within the life insurance industry
- Advanced actuarial and modelling skills, including practical experience in the pricing of insurance products
- Advanced working knowledge of spreadsheet, database and word processing software
- Advanced knowledge of AXIS actuarial application
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong influencing skills and the ability to develop recommendations that balance competing objectives
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Working knowledge of accounting standards and regulatory capital requirements for the Canadian life insurance industry
