POSITION OVERVIEW:
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Fitness Trainer to join our recreation team! In this engaging and client-focused role, you will help individuals achieve their health, wellness, and fitness goals through expert instruction, encouragement, and personalized program support.
Your primary responsibilities will include assessing individual fitness levels, developing customized training and fitness programs, and leading both one-on-one and group training sessions. You will provide professional guidance on exercise techniques, health and fitness practices, and the safe and effective use of a variety of weight training and fitness equipment, ensuring participants use proper form and follow established safety standards.
You will also play an important role in overseeing weight room and recreational gym operations during training sessions, helping to maintain a safe, welcoming, and motivating environment for all users. This includes monitoring equipment condition, identifying maintenance needs, and carrying out minor equipment repairs where appropriate.
You will need to exercise sound judgment, work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and adapt your approach to meet the needs of a diverse range of participants and customers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a diploma or certification program in community recreation, leadership and/or sports science, and sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of individual weight training and fitness programs and of the various types of weight training equipment.
• Sound knowledge of current personal training industry standards and methods of practice.
• Sound knowledge of applicable policies, regulations and rules governing the work performed.
• Working knowledge of the principals of anatomy and physiology as it applies to the work performed.
• Ability to oversee weight room and recreational gym operations when leading an individual or group training session.
• Working knowledge of fitness equipment machines and ability to do assessment and minor repairs.
• Ability to evaluate individual’s fitness levels, develop individual weight training and fitness programs, and provide advice and guidance relative to health and fitness matters.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and deal tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of customers.
• Ability to prepare and maintain correspondence, records and reports.
• Ability to present ideas and viewpoints effectively both orally and in writing.
• Skill in the operation of a variety of equipment used in programs for health, wellness and fitness facilities.
HOURS OF WORK
Dependent upon registration, fitness trainers shall work a minimum of one (1) hour to a maximum of eight (8) hours in a day. Wherever practicable, the Employer will endeavor to provide fitness trainers with a minimum of two (2) consecutive hours of work. It is agreed that such work will be in either job classification identified in this Letter of Understanding, provided the employee is qualified to perform the work.
REQUIRED LICENCES, CERTIFICATE & REGISTRATIONS
BC Recreation and Park Association Basic Fitness Leaders – Weight Training (or equivalent).
BC Recreation and Park Association Personal Trainer Certification (or equivalent).
Standard First Aid Certificate
CPR/AED Certification.
