About the Site
New Afton Mine
Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site. Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area offers a vibrant community with a university, world‑class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, recreational lakes and award‑winning vineyards.

Schedule : 5x2 or 4x3; flexible work schedule available; site‑based role.
Reports To : Tailings and Surface Superintendent.
Senior Tailings Engineer – Safety and Governance will safeguard our tailings facilities, lead a dedicated team, and advance safety, governance, and environmental stewardship at New Afton Mine.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure safety and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of every decision.Champion regulatory compliance and produce performance reports that set the standard for facility management.Lead and organize comprehensive tailings facility safety inspections and external reviews for our four tailings facilities.Drive risk assessments and ensure our emergency preparedness plans are robust and effective.Support and enhance systems that monitor facility instrumentation, analyze performance data, and respond swiftly to potential issues.Lead and support the scoping, budgeting, and implementation of design changes, maintenance, and quality construction projects.Provide leadership, direction, and senior level review for project engineering and reporting activities as a direct supervisor to technical staff.Inspire and mentor junior engineers and field inspection teams, fostering a culture of growth and safety excellence.Communicate clearly and confidently with site leadership, regulators, and community stakeholders.Maintain accurate records and manage document control to keep our operations running smoothly.Identify new opportunities for safety improvements and support ongoing professional development within the team.Ensure professional practice compliance. As an EGBC registrant, ensure that work performed personally or delegated within scope of practice complies with New Gold’s Professional Practice Management plan.Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership : present a united front to the organization, role model values and culture with care and compassion, actively listen and engage with integrity, foster diverse perspectives, provide coaching and timely feedback, and celebrate success.Registered as a P.Eng. with EGBC, holding a bachelor’s degree in mining, civil, or geotechnical engineering, or a related field.8+ years of progressive experience in tailings facility safety, geotechnical engineering, or related fields.2+ years of proven leadership experience supervising consultants, contractors, and team members.Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance within mining and tailings operations.Familiarity with tailings facility governance frameworks (e.g., MAC, GISTM, CDA).Experience conducting tailings facility safety inspections and leading risk assessments.Expertise in emergency preparedness planning.Familiarity with monitoring instrumentation and analyzing performance data.Attention to detail for maintaining records and managing document control.Other Requirements
Completion of pre‑placement functional screen.Proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license.Demonstrated eligibility to work in Canada.Confirmation of valid educational requirements.Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position is between $125,000 and $135,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
