OVERVIEW : Reporting to the North Regional Care Program Support Work Coordinators, the Respite Workers will be responsible for providing short intervals of relief for House Parents and providing temporary primary care of children.

The Respite Worker provides support for children by facilitating a routine in the home that matches the structure provided by the House Parent.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES :

  • Provide nurturing and positive caregiving to the children / youth in the House Parents absence.
  • Following routines for the children / youth; getting them ready for school, preparing nutritional meals, teaching life skills, following hygiene needs and bedtime routines, etc.
  • Keeping the home clean and tidy.
  • Interact and engage with the children and youth, based on their developmental needs and interests and resources that stimulate their learning.

Providing age-appropriate and needs-appropriate supervision.

  • Use nurturing and strength-based language to support positive self-identity.
  • Assist children and youth in building emotional intelligence through supporting and guiding behaviours with a nurturing approach.
  • Support children in learning about their cultural identity in age-appropriate ways access to opportunities to learn or maintain Indigenous language.
  • Support healthy family connections by facilitating family visits as directed by the guardian agency.
  • Maintain accurate reporting of daily file recordings, logs, email, incident reports, meetings and phone conversations.
  • Communicate concerns, needs and observations to Support Work Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Following outlined Case Plans and child safety plans.
  • Respond to emergencies by contacting house parent, SECFS, medical professionals, and RCMP as necessary.
  • Follow SAI policies regarding confidentiality, social media use, and professional conduct.
  • Accompany children and youth to appointments as directed by the house parent.
  • Respite Workers fill in for the House Parents for the 4 days they have away from the home (96 hours maximum).

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Completion of high school and knowledge in Child and Family Services (CFS) legislation.
  • Knowledge of Addictions and Trauma and the effect it has on families.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and / or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture and traditional philosophies and ability to speak Anishinaabe preferred.
  • Good communication, organization, problem solving and team skills.
  • Willing to travel to the Southeast First Nation communities.
  • Successful applicant(s) will also be required to provide proof of at least the first two COVID-19 vaccination prior to start date.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba driver’s license and a reliable vehicle with the ability to provide a clear drivers abstract.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, Criminal Record check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), and Prior Contact Check as conditions of employment.
