One of the sunniest regions in BC’s Lower Mainland, Delta embraces three unique communities – Ladner, North Delta and Tsawwassen. The City of Delta is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team and share in our commitment to lead the way in public service excellence.

The City is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Environmental Coordinator to support the delivery and advancement of its environmental quality control programs. This role involves technical, inspectional, regulatory, and enforcement work related to climate change, air and water quality, effluent discharge, noise, contaminated sites, pesticide use, and pest and noxious weed control.

Reporting with minimal supervision, the Environmental Coordinator exercises considerable independence and judgment while supporting program development, conducting inspections and investigations, and working closely with internal and external partners. This position also plays a key role in public engagement, research, emergency response, and may supervise seasonal staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing the City’s environmental quality control programs, policies, bylaws, and standards.
  • Support climate change initiatives aimed at reducing corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Conduct inspections, monitoring, and investigations of commercial and industrial operations, including water, soil, and noise testing, and enforce compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Review development plans and business license applications, recommending improvements to minimize environmental impacts.
  • Participate in environmental research, analyze data, and prepare technical and written reports.
  • Liaise with internal departments, regulatory agencies, businesses, developers, and the public to provide guidance and explain environmental policies and standards.
  • Supervise, train, and assign work to seasonal staff as required.
  • Support emergency response efforts related to toxic spills and environmental incidents.
  • Maintain records, reports, and other technical or administrative documentation related to environmental programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology, ecology, or a related discipline, plus relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of environmental quality control methods, procedures, equipment, and current trends.
  • Knowledge of applicable policies, regulations, bylaws, and environmental standards.
  • Strong understanding of chemistry, biology, ecology, and physics as applied to environmental work.
  • Ability to conduct research and analytical work, interpret plans, and prepare technical and written reports.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain and interpret policies, regulations, and bylaws, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience supervising or training staff is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
  • At the City of Delta, we are committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce that is representative of our community, providing equal opportunity and fostering an inclusive workplace where our individual differences are recognized, valued and celebrated.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those under consideration will be contacted.

Copies of relevant professional certificates, degrees, or tickets must be submitted with your application.

Preferred candidates will be required to submit a Police Information Check.
