Mandate
Reporting to the Manager, Curriculum Development and Renewal, the Curriculum Development Specialist (Indigenization & Decolonization) provides expertise, services and leadership in supporting faculties and academic departments on the design and redesign of program-level curriculum objectives and individual courses, including the development of program and course learning outcomes. This position supports the goals of the division and the campus, as outlined in UVic’s Indigenous Plan centering on Learning & Teaching as a priority area, which prioritizes programming that integrates Indigenous ways of knowing.
We undertake to enact the principles outlined by Universities Canada Principles on Indigenous Education as well as the 94 Calls to Action developed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada by developing culturally appropriate curricula as mandated in both documents. This role recognizes that work in Indigenization and decolonization involves sustained relational engagement and emotional labour, and is supported through collaborative, respectful, and team-based approaches within LTI.
Objectives
The Curriculum Development Specialist works closely with Elders, knowledge keepers, faculties, departments, instructors, Learning Designers and other stakeholders to ensure that content provided by the faculty / instructor (subject matter expert) is re-imagined, researched and developed to be decolonized and indigenized. This position is central to supporting faculty and instructors in the development of Indigenous curricula for online and in-person teaching and courses as well as at program level curriculum development. In this role, Indigenization refers to the meaningful integration of Indigenous ways of knowing, learning, and being within teaching and curriculum, while decolonization is understood as a reflective, relational, and ongoing process rather than a completed outcome. The position engages in all aspects of the work conducted by LTI, including supporting faculty development, fostering a community around teaching, and cultivating a culture of learning and teaching that advances instructional practice and student academic success.
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree plus 2-5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Knowledge of Indigenization of curricula and academic programming is required.
