Job description

At Kootenay Savings, banking is not just a transaction—it’s a relationship, a responsibility, and a commitment to the places we call home. We’re looking for an Assistant Branch Manager who believes leadership is about service, trust, and showing up for people when it matters most.

This is a role for someone who understands the importance of strong, local financial institutions in small towns and rural communities—and who wants to be part of something bigger than themselves.

As an Assistant Branch Manager, you’ll play a hands-on leadership role supporting our Castlegar and Salmo branches. You’ll coach and develop staff, help guide branch performance, and create an environment where people feel supported, confident, and proud of the work they do. Your leadership will help ensure our members receive thoughtful, reliable service—whether they’re planning for the future, navigating change, or facing a critical moment in their lives.

This role is rooted in servant leadership . It’s about creating clarity and consistency for your team, leading with empathy and accountability, and building trust—inside the branch and across the community. You’ll step in when needed, collaborate closely with others, and lead with values that reflect care, integrity, and respect.

If you’re motivated by purpose, believe in community-based banking, and want to grow your leadership career with an organization that genuinely invests in people and place, we’d love to hear from you.

MAJOR ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership, Branch Planning & Communication

  • Lead and role model behaviors that reflect Kootenay Savings’ vision, values, and culture, inspiring staff to embrace change, think innovatively, and contribute to a one-team environment.
  • Coach, develop, and engage staff through performance and development planning, regular feedback, and coaching.
  • Manage staff effectively ensuring compliance with the Collective Agreement and organizational policies.
  • Drive the adoption of new processes, systems, and procedures by ensuring staff understand expectations, following up on adherence, and addressing gaps.
  • Monitor key branch results and use data to identify opportunities, adjust plans, and support staff with coaching.
  • Facilitate clear, two-way communication between the Branch Manager, corporate departments, and branch staff, encouraging feedback.
  • Assume responsibility for the branch in the Manager’s absence, including making informed, independent decisions related to operations, member service, risk, and exception handling.
  • Champion consistency by reinforcing processes and ensuring everyone understands how their work contributes to Kootenay Savings’ goals.
  • Participate in projects and initiatives across Kootenay Savings, contributing insights, subject matter expertise, and making recommendations to support successful implementation and adoption.
  • Model a servant leadership approach by actively listening, removing barriers, and supporting staff success.

Branch Operations & Compliance

  • Oversee branch operational tasks including, but not limited to, cash management, payroll, GL reconciliation, delinquency monitoring, and staffing coverage, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Support lending activities within assigned limits, including preparing documentation and supporting applications in a relief capacity, while coaching staff and escalating recommendations as needed.
  • Ensure staff are informed and compliant with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including follow-up on corrective action and training where appropriate.
  • Understand prioritization, helping staff manage workload, meet deadlines, and focus on activities that drive results and support organizational goals.
  • Maintain awareness of credit union regulatory requirements and ensure operational practices align with compliance standards.
  • Demonstrate strong computer skills and the ability to learn and adapt to new systems quickly.
  • Community Engagement & Business Development

  • Represent Kootenay Savings in the community, supporting events and initiatives, and encouraging staff to participate.
  • Identify and pursue business opportunities within the community and across Kootenay Savings’ products and services, including KIS, MoneyWorks, and Commercial Services, supporting sustainable growth.
  • Build strong relationships with personal and business members by providing high-quality, consistent service and support.
  • Stay aware of market trends and competitor activity, sharing insights with staff and leadership to identify opportunities.
  • Serve as a visible ambassador for Kootenay Savings, fostering trust and loyalty through authentic engagement and service excellence.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 4 years’ financial industry experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including 2 years in a supervisory role, and 2 years in a lending role in last eight years.
  • Strong computer literacy skills with the ability to learn and adapt to new systems quickly.
  • Solid understanding of branch operations, policies and risk controls.
  • Strong working knowledge of HR practices including Labour Relations, Human Rights legislation, progressive discipline, and human resources best practices.
  • Foundational understanding of the regulatory environment governing credit unions.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, develop and engage staff.
  • Ability to make informed, independent decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to deliver exceptional member service and achieve sales goals.
  • Excellent planning, prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Must be bondable
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Business, Finance or Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as an Assistant Manager or Supervisor in a credit union or financial institution in the last five years.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Demonstrated servant leadership approach and experience leading through change.
  • Experience as a leader in a unionized environment over last three years.
