THE OPPORTUNITY
A&H Steel is committed to creating a value-driven approach to its Human Resources and people development efforts. Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the Senior Project Manager leads the project team and manages more complex projects directly.
The Senior Project Manager provides a higher level and wider scope of management to projects and project teams as well as to A&H Vancouver.
Project duties include but are not limited to defining the scope of a project in collaboration with the contractor, the maintenance of project documentation, creating a detailed project execution plan, developing a schedule for project completion, managing and reporting on project budgets and estimates to completion, is responsible for the change management process and producing consolidated reports.
Administrative requirements include performance management of project management team, producing and presenting departmental reports, contract management including review prior to signature.
Duties include accurate project file set-up and documentation, regular reporting of project status and summarization of project close-out documents.
RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leadership and Management
- Meet with each direct report for a one-on-one, once per month for a minimum of 30 minutes to discuss what is going well for them and where they need support.
- Responsible for ongoing positive performance recognition.
- Ensure employees have consistent feedback in a professional, timely and clear manner,
- Support all employees to ensure their job requirements are being fulfilled.
- Monitor on a quarterly basis employees performance levels, efficiency and ability.
- Identify training needs and communicate with Senior Management what training resources are needed.
- Train, coach, mentor, and provide performance feedback to Project Managers and Coordinators and provide developmental opportunities.
Documentation & Reporting
- Assist in the development and training for an efficient document control department.
- Produce progress reports for each project (weekly / monthly).
- Record and manage project issues.
- Evaluate the outcomes of each project with a project summary.
- Assist in the development of administrative efficiencies through documented procedures.
- Responsible for the assignment of detailers to new projects.
Financial Accountabilities
- Evaluating each projects cost breakdown at the start of the project to ensure maximum profitability at the end of a project.
- Develop checks and balances’ to track costs throughout each project.
- Evaluate the cost / financial outcomes of each project with accounting department and provide monthly project forecasting.
- Responsible to uphold prudent spending on department budgets.
- Approval of expenses and leave requests of direct reports.
Communication and Feedback
Senior Management Meetings
Participate in monthly management meetings, as main representative for the project management department.
Project Kick-off Meetings As required
- Facilitate discussion for a particular project with regards to points of contact, scope, estimate review, constructability review, schedule milestones and initial contact questions.
- Weekly follow-up on the progress of the project, gathering all information required for project close-out meeting.
Project Close-out Meetings As required
- Facilitate review of a project with regards to project outcomes / metrics, were scheduled milestones met, constructability issues, team evaluation and budget review.
- Facilitate discussion around was this project successful’. Take note on lessons learned and take aways for future projects.
Alignment Meeting Weekly
Provide a snapshot of my day-to-day activities for the week.
Foreman Meetings - Monthly
- Liaison between detailing department and field.
- Gather and bring back feedback to projects department from field.
- Active participant in cross-department initiatives with field include metrics.
Monthly Strategy Meeting Monthly
- Discuss initiation and progress on personal strategic initiatives.
- Actively participate in open discussions with team.
- Provide updates / reports for metrics in projects department.

FIRST YEAR MEASURES OF SUCCESS

- Ensure that all project documentation is consistently up to date and free of discrepancies.
- Oversee project budgets and ensure that job costing is accurately maintained and aligned with financial projections.
- Provide comprehensive management of the team's financial resources.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes :
Education
- Post-secondary education in Business or Engineering is required.
- PMP designation is preferred with equivalent experience being considered.
Experience
- 10+ years progressive experience as a Senior Project Manager.
- Experience in construction, specifically with commercial and industrial construction.
- Exceptional knowledge of construction drawings and documents.
- Previous management of a project support team.
- Previous experience planning and completing large design and construction projects.
- Specific experience with rebar reinforcing, either drafting, estimating, or coordinating.
Competencies and Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction drawings and construction methods, specific to concrete reinforcing.
- Comprehensive knowledge of project sequencing, resources, and objectives.
- Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills.
- Knowledgeable in contract documentation.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation and troubleshooting / problem solving skills.
- Knowledgeable in aSa software.
- Proficient with MS Office tools.
- Proficient in Primavera or MS Projects.
- Strong team player.
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities grounded in self-awareness and the ability to understand the individual needs of team members.
