Municipal District of Taber - Truck Driver/Equipment Operator

Job Description

The Truck Driver / Equipment Operator is pivotal in executing the loading, hauling of heavy equipment and operating a water truck for our construction crew, while also being responsible for the operation and basic maintenance of various heavy and light construction equipment.

Reporting primarily to the Public Works and Construction Supervisor, this role necessitates adherence to safety regulations, efficient coordination within various divisions, and ensuring the timely and quality completion of projects in alignment with the Municipal District of Taber’s standards and policies.

Key Work Activities :

• Coordinating operations within various divisions and with different crews (e.g., Gravel Crew, Road Maintenance Crew).
• Operating a truck and other heavy / light construction equipment for road maintenance and other tasks.
• Conducting pre / post-trip inspections of equipment and reporting defects.
• Performing general service work on municipal equipment and preventative maintenance.
• Relaying instructions and directions related to work assignments.
• Ensuring adherence to all safety regulations and participating in safety meetings.
• Keeping records pertinent to the job and assisting with truck and trailer inspections.
• Attending meetings related to Public Works operations and participating in relevant training sessions.
• Assisting in planning and improvements in municipal infrastructure and performing other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities :

• Primarily an outdoor work environment with moderate risks and potential discomfort due to noise, dust, grease, mud, moving vehicles, and varying temperatures.
• Requirement to wear personal protective equipment such as safety boots, high-visibility vest, and hearing protection.
• Involves physical exertion like long periods of standing, walking on uneven terrain, and occasionally lifting heavy items, requiring average physical agility and dexterity.

Requirements

Education and Experience :

• Valid Class 1 driver's license with air ticket.
• Minimum of three years’ experience in the operation of Class 1 vehicles.
• Experience in operating and maintaining light and heavy construction equipment.

Requirements

Education and Knowledge Required : Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Familiarity with municipal operations, road construction, and procurement. Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and compliance.

Experience and Technical Skills Required : 3-5 years of experience in Municipal / Public Works or environmental contracting.

Supervisory experience in road and infrastructure construction and repairs. Valid Class 5 Operator's License or willingness to upgrade.

Ability to coordinate Alberta One-Call and manage heavy construction equipment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Strong organization and leadership skills.
