A Day in the Life

As the Senior Director of Organizing at UFCW 1518, you hold a pivotal role in advancing the union’s mission through strategic planning, execution of organizing campaigns and fostering a culture of engagement and growth within the organization.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Engagement & Growth, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring seamless coordination and alignment of efforts for the Organizing department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the Organizing Department in planning and executing external organizing campaigns, while providing support for internal organizing efforts, including :
  • Union organizing drives
  • Contract ratification campaigns
  • Job action campaigns (i.e., strikes)
  • Leadership development in disengaged units
  • Develop and Implement strategies and systems to support and build a growing organizing department that is prepared to take on large organizing targets
  • Work with the leadership team to develop an annual strategic growth plan, with defined targets and goals, and a plan to meet them
  • Manage all organizing-focused education initiatives to embed a culture of organizing within the local
  • Manage special campaigns, including defining project objectives, scope, deliverables, milestones, resource requirements, and sources
  • Work closely with the Communications and Campaigns department to develop and execute joint digital lead generation strategies
  • Oversee the filing of organizing-related applications (certification, successor rights, unfair labour practice complaints, etc.

to appropriate Labour Boards (LRB and CLRB).

  • Coordinate various issue campaigns and projects of the local and coordinate community events throughout the year.
  • Represent the organization at personnel-related hearings, investigations, mediations, and in the resolution of employee-related matters.
  • Facilitate work between Organizers and Union Negotiators during first contract negotiations
  • Coordinate various issue campaigns, community events, and personnel-related matters.
  • Foster growth at UFCW 1518 and the development of its people by managing the Organizing team with hands-on leadership, mentorship, and support to assigned employees to set them up for success in their roles.

Qualifications and Other Requirements :

  • 5+ years leading union or community organizing campaigns with campaign planning experience.
  • Thorough understanding of BC labour law and union organizing principles.
  • Experience in organizing under the BC Labor Relations Code, filing certification applications and representing the union at certification hearings.
  • Prior leadership experience in a unionized environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; formal negotiation / arbitration training preferred.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, CRMs, and record management.
  • Excellent judgment, confidentiality, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Ability to lead and develop teams, work autonomously, and manage time efficiently.
  • Dedication to social justice.
  • Flexibility for travel and irregular hours; possession of a valid class 5 driving license is required.
  • Fluency in a second language is an asset.
