Assistant Grounds Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide administrative support to the Grounds Manager by assisting in various administrative functions including : processing invoices, ordering supplies, scheduling equipment repairs, etc;
  • Coordinating annual inspections and training;
  • Perform in an acting or interim capacity for the Grounds Manager when / if required, such as vacations, etc;
  • Develop and maintain a regular schedule of garden and plant maintenance, in keeping with seasonal requirements;
  • Lead / oversee and perform garden maintenance, tree maintenance and the design and purchasing of materials;
  • Regularly monitor plant material for insects and diseases and treat immediately as per current industry standards;
  • Coordinate activity of contractors to assist department;
  • Manage the College’s tree planting program and special gardens;
  • Train new staff on horticultural techniques and related tools / equipment;
  • Develop and maintain a high level of customer service and good working relationships with the Ridley College community, including staff, faculty, students, parents and visitors to the campus;
  • Perform clearing of ice and snow on roadways, sidewalks, stairs, fire escapes and city walkways (under Ridley’s responsibility) along with the application of de-icing products;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Horticulture and minimum five (5) years' experience as a horticulture technician in an institutional or commercial setting, including garden and plant maintenance, snow removal and operation of associated equipment.
  • Experience in a leadership / supervisory role with people management responsibilities;.
  • Experience in the safe operation of equipment and tools necessary for gardening and snow removal.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of garden maintenance practices including plant care, native plants, irrigation systems, entomology and pathology and environmentally safe practices / controls.
  • Ability to plan, design and develop gardens in consideration of aesthetic and operational objectives.
  • Ability to design garden irrigation systems.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors.
