Compensation Range

$5,365.42 - $7,709.92 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Description Summary

This role is for a Research Manager of the CART How Far is Too Far (HFITF) Project - a large, international four year CIHR grant funded project coordinating multi-site activities and a range of partner organizations.

This project is a central activity of the Contraception and Abortion Research Team (CART), located at BC Women's Hospital and Health Centre.

The CART team is a national, interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral pan-Canadian research network of researchers, clinicians, trainees, decision makers, and community advocates.

CART is committed to conduct impactful research that improves equitable access to abortion and contraception care. The incumbent will play a key role in daily management of a large multisite national abortion access research project, while assisting the team to support the range of team activities.

This role will be responsible for CART HFITF project administration, as well as for overall CART management of staff across current projects, working with the PI to plan new projects, hiring of new staff, and human resources support, management of finance and budget, and facilitation of research activities across the CART projects based at UBC Department of Family Practice.

Organizational Status

The incumbent will report directly to Professor Wendy Norman, the lead investigator on the CART HFITF Project and co-lead of CART, in the Department of Family Practice.

The position will work on-site within the CART research laboratory in the Women’s Health Research Institute within BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre.

Work Performed

  • Create and manage overall project work plans, implement, oversee, and maintain the work plans.
  • In collaboration with PIs, assign various research tasks to research staff members and trainees.
  • Monitor and supervise the carrying out of assigned tasks and make alterations to maximize efficiency while keeping within timelines and budget restrictions.
  • Drafts, edits, updates, synthesizes and finalizes a variety of documents with input from project leads, including correspondence, briefing notes, speaking notes, scientific progress reports, and presentation materials;
  • Prepare and submit required ethics applications and amendments and ensure that project activities conform to the ethics board guidelines and certifications.
  • Provide support to the preparation of knowledge translation documents, evidence briefs and study reports.
  • Lead or coordinate data analysis and report writing.
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Provide operational support to the research project team and assist with various sub-projects.
  • Develop and manage infrastructure linkages within affiliated organizations and ensure effective communication and collaboration.
  • Manage enquiries from team members, trainees, collaborators, stakeholders, media, vendors, University Finance, HR, and other supporting departments.
  • Participate in the preparation of research team annual achievement reports and project progress reports required by any affiliated organization or funding agency.
  • Work with Principal Investigators to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate research staff, trainees and volunteers.
  • Contribute to creating a strong team environment by fostering trust and mutual respect and supporting open dialogue.
  • Prepare and manage research project budgets.
  • Oversee the expenditures of the research project grant to ensure that the use of funds is in line with the guidelines of the institutions and funding agency.

Consequence of Error / Judgement

The Contraception and Abortion Research Team Access project engages an interdisciplinary research network of faculty, researchers, and trainees from major universities in Canada, as well as stakeholders and policy makers from provincial and federal level governments, and professional organizations across the country.

Errors made, or inappropriate judgement exercised, may result in the loss of collaborative relationships and partnerships, compromising the quality of the research findings, overall project deadlines not being met, budget overages, and damage to the reputation of the team and the credibility of the investigators.

Supervision Received

The Research Manager is directly supervised by, and reports to, Professor Norman.

Supervision Given

In collaboration with Professor Norman, and other the PIs, the Research Manager is responsible for supervision of the research project staff, trainees, and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-graduate degree (PhD level is preferred) in Health or a Social Sciences discipline.

Recent related experience in research management or project coordination preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Excellent analysis skills (quantitative, qualitative, data management software) are an asset.

Advanced MS Word, Excel, and Power Point skills are essential.

Excellent organizational, time management, task prioritizationand problem solving skills.

Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.

Being comfortable working within a multidisciplinary team in a fast paced environment.

Ability to assign, train, and supervise the work of others.Self-motivated and self-directed.
