Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated professional who shares our commitment to quality and student success. Professional and Part-Time Learning (PPL) requires a part-time facilitator to teach the course entitled “Sociology Introduction” Course Code - SOCI 1050. This course will be delivered online asynchronously.

course description:

Sociology is the study of people and how they interact with each other and various social groups. This course deals with the study of people's lives, their relationship to society as a whole, and how people are affected by the society in which they live. The concepts, theories and methods of the discipline will be introduced and discussed with particular

emphasis on the dynamics of Canadian society and Canadian social problems.

Important note for Part-Time Facilitator applicants:

The responsibilities of Durham College Part-Time Facilitators include, but are not limited to:

1.Creating a positive learning environment that accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;

2.Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process;

3.Effectively using educational technologies to support learning as well as managing and posting grades;

4.Develop and execute a curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning;

5.Ensuring that all course content is current and relevant;

6.Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and

7.Working effectively with students, the program team and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

1.Minimum of five years of recent experience that relates directly to the topic being taught;

2.Holds a Master’s degree in Sociology or a related degree.

3.Preferred teaching experience at the post-secondary level, with demonstrated application of adult educational principles and teaching/assessment methodologies;

4.Preferred teaching experience in a fully online environment with experience in the use of technology to support student learning and manage grades;

5.Superior skills in the areas of verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving;

6.Excellent organizational and time management skills;

7.Track record in meeting deadlines;

8.Self-motivated and independent worker who also functions well in a team environment;

9.Committed to life-long learning;

10.Understanding of the Ontario community college system.
