About the job : What you’ll do
The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s P&C and Telecom systems & networks. These systems contribute to a safe and reliable operation of BC Hydro’s electric system while meeting the performance requirements of system planners, regulators, customers, and other stakeholders. The division contributes to engineering studies, specifications, standards, design solutions, construction documentation, and provides engineering oversight of work done by our engineering service partners. It provides technical support during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning in the project lifecycle. The division is also responsible for deploying and sustaining numerous regulatory standards, including cyber security standards and compliance practices for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and telecommunication systems.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Commissioning Engineer position in the P&C Project Engineering and Commissioning team within the P&C / Telecom Engineering Division. Our Commissioning team performs final checks and acceptance of P&C devices before it enters BC Hydro system. Commissioning team members work with cross functional teams to ensure that P&C assets are fully installed, tested and commissioned.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, problem solving and an agile working style. While the work is based out of Burnaby, you’ll get to travel to BC Hydro’s facilities located throughout British Columbia and may occasionally travel to other parts of North America and internationally.
In the Commissioning Engineering role, you will :
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert on P&C Commissioning activities to projects
- Act as a Professional of Record for P&C commissioning results.
- Coordinate and oversee the development of P&C staging plan with the various engineering teams and BC Hydro Control Center
- Lead testing and commissioning of specialised P&C systems and equipment
- Prepare commissioning plans for complex P&C systems
- Perform commissioning review and acceptance for P&C testing deliverables
- Oversight of P&C commissioning activities
- Participate in constructability reviews and staging plans
- Provide support to field commissioning resources
- Establish and maintain commissioning standards and practices
- Perform technical lead role to other team members
- You will work closely with field commissioning resources to verify the test result and act as the POR for the approval and acceptance of the test results.
- You will work with Field Operations, Quality Management, and the project engineering teams to ensure that technical support is provided during construction and commissioning and that technical issues are resolved in a timely manner.
- You will prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC and BC Hydro design practices.
- You will coach members of your project teams to help them to resolve issues or advance their work.
- You will assist in the development of department objectives and performance measurements and support the technical and operational performance of the team to meet these objectives and other business needs.
- You will assist in the development and enhancement of engineering processes and workflows, review procedures, and quality assurance practices.
- You will proactively undertake and / or significantly contribute to problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of customized solutions to complex engineering problems considering value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.
- You will chair meetings to address engineering problems, attend and address seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences, and prepare and deliver presentations to various audiences.
What you bring
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities. Preferred areas of study include computer engineering, control systems, telecommunications, systems engineering, or power engineering.Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC). The individual shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education requirements and code of ethics.A minimum of 10 years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in transmission power systems, industrial control systems, cybersecurity, or systems engineering.A minimum of 4 years leading and coordinating P&C commissioning activities on medium to large projects, preferably on projects similar in nature to BC Hydro in terms of size, complexity and stakeholders.Candidates for this position will be able to understand the impact of the project on the transmission system andoperations, and to understand the interactions and priorities required to deliver multi-discipline projects.Strong experience in P&C systems either as a P&C designer or P&C setting engineer is an asset. System engineer experience may also be considered.Strong P&C commissioning experience is an assetExcellent leadership and communication skills, including writing, are required in order to advance the project, including coordinating and influencing various parties both within BC Hydro and with external delivery partners and stakeholders.Good understanding of Project Management processes.Strong knowledge of BC Hydro’s project delivery processes and design practice is an asset.What we offer
