Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking an Urban Planner to join our growing Buildings and Places team. This position could be based out of our Winnipeg or Mississauga, ON office.

As the successful candidate will be working on projects across Canada, we are open to remote or hybrid work arrangements.

This is a one year contract.

As a self starter, the Urban Planner will, under minimal supervision, perform advanced and / or complex duties based on a good understanding of Indigenous planning and the urban and regional planning framework in Ontario and / or Manitoba.

You will leverage your experience having contributed to and / or led planning and urban design projects (e.g., public realm design, secondary plans, First Nation community plans).

Familiarity with the planning and development permit application process is an asset. You will provide expertise to clients as well as the AECOM team, and be poised to help grow our planning presence throughout Canada.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage complex planning and urban design projects for municipalities, Indigenous Communities and private sector clients;
  • Collaborate with AECOM specialists (designers, architects, engineers) to develop high-quality site-specific and regional concept plans;
  • Analyze, summarize and provide qualified planning advice for urban and regional planning projects, based on review of applicable policy and legislation;
  • Prepare Recreation Planning documents including level of service studies, Master Parks Plans and Active Transportation Master Plans.
  • Present plans, reports and other findings to communities, public and private clients, advisory boards, representatives of public agencies and elected officials;
  • Manage projects, develop and administer work plans, schedules and budgets to advance projects, and coordinate the work of project team members and sub-consultants;
  • Design, lead and manage Stakeholder, Public and Indigenous Engagement Programs, prepare and deliver presentations, reports and other project related deliverables;
  • Mentor colleagues, develop skills of the existing team and act as a point of reference on technical matters;
  • Support client business development, identify opportunities, promote urban and community planning services, develop relationships, and generate business through client development and preparation of proposals.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :

In order to be considered for the position, candidates must possess no less than :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Planning, or related field with four (4)+ years’ of relevant experience in planning
  • Eligibility for Full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI) or the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI)

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in Planning or related field;
  • Ten (10)+ years’ experience in planning, ideally with both private sector and public sector experience;
  • Full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI) or the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI);
  • Strong knowledge of and experience applying planning policy and regulations in Manitoba and / or Ontario;
  • Strong portfolio of projects demonstrating excellent technical capabilities with a focus on the delivery of high quality planning and urban design projects;
  • Demonstrated experience working on First Nations / Indigenous / Northern Community Planning projects, and commitment to engaging with Indigenous ways of knowing;
  • Demonstrated record of successful project delivery from proposal development to completion, on time and budget;
  • Knowledge, experience and / or passion for climate resilient communities;
  • Superior interpersonal skills including relationship building, communication at all levels and an ability to work collaboratively across integrated teams both within the Urbanism + Planning Practice and AECOM business lines and market sectors;
  • Demonstrated experience in client relationship management, project management and team management;
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
  • Knowledge and experience working with MS Office (Project), Primavera P6, AutoCAD, GIS, SketchUp, Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop);
  • Experience providing expert testimony and resolving issues through mediation;
  • Membership in IAP2.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel out of Manitoba and / or Ontario on project work.
