With an annual construction volume of $150 million we typically have fifteen to twenty projects in various stages of construction with a total construction value of $500 million in progress and a similar amount in development.

The Role

As one of Unitech’s Directors of Project Managers you will hold a senior position within the company and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of selected construction projects through Pre-Construction, Construction and Post-Construction phases.

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, your innovative, collaborative, firm, fair and fun approach will help ensure our construction projects are delivered in accordance with our client’s goals and priorities.

You will be committed to providing clarity and transparency to our clients through our systems, procedures, and project reporting.

You will provide leadership and mentorship to our Project Managers through effective, detailed review, communication, and purposeful feedback, with a focus on their ongoing professional development.

Key Responsibilities :

Pre-Construction

  • Assist with the development and adoption of the Project Charter with the key project team members ensuring the owners goals and priorities are ALWAYS at the forefront.
  • Assist with project risk identification, evaluation, and the development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide constructability input (when you feel it is required) to optimize the design and detailing during each design stage while reflecting the teams risk mitigation strategies
  • Assist with the development of cost estimates at each stage of design.
  • Produce initial project schedule with direct report. Assist with the update, modification, and maintenance of the project schedule at each stage of design.
  • Review in detail the front-end tender documentation and scope of work packages to ensure that tender packages are clear and concise and do not include any undefinable or risky pieces of work as well as making sure there are no double up work items in other trade packages.
  • Review in detail Unitech’s Class A Tracker budget in coordination with front end tender documents to ensure that all items of work being tendered are coordinated into one budget, and that work not being tendered and risks identified have all been budgeted elsewhere.

Construction

  • Be a resource for all direct reports’ project management responsibilities.
  • Attend project start-up meeting with Owner, Consultant Team & Trades, and regular project meetings
  • Review in detail and approve the analysis sheet, the monthly report package including cost forecasting, changes to project budget and schedule as well as recommendations made to the owner.
  • Review and approve all trade contractor performance of work dispute resolutions.
  • Audit direct reports processes and procedures in the following areas to ensure continuity across the organization :
  • Cost Control and Accounting
  • Changes in Work
  • Submittals
  • Site Instructions

Post-Construction

  • Review and approve the final monthly report package.
  • Attend regular project meetings.
  • Review operating and maintenance manual requirements and submission approval schedules.
  • Attend lessons learned meeting with key project team members, ensure appropriate follow up.

General

  • Coordinate and lead all performance management activities with your direct reports, including Quarterly Conversations and Weekly or Bi-Weekly Check Ins.
  • Participate in recruitment of all potential direct reports and their direct reports.
  • Consistently participate in the education, growth, and development of direct reports.
  • Actively participate in and lead Project Management Level 10 meetings.
  • Participate in all Operations Level 10 meetings.
  • Manage your direct report’s time-off requests.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education, Knowledge, & Experience :

  • Post-secondary graduation from a management or construction program or equivalent relevant combination of training and relevant work experience;
  • Certified Building Technician (CTech), or Applied Science Technologist (AScT) designation a significant asset;
  • Not less than ten (10) years of Project Management experience in a similar role;
  • Not less than five (5) years of people leadership experience;
  • Not less than two (2) years of experience at the senior management level;
  • Specialized training in construction management or project management considered a significant asset as too will be experience in the construction industry and the ability to present to, and interact with, larger groups;
  • Good working knowledge of current construction methods, materials, procedures, drawings, specifications and building codes.
  • Excellent budgeting and estimating skills and exemplary spreadsheet skills; and,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point) as well as other construction applications.

  • High level of personal and professional integrity.

Physical Demands :

  • Frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand; twist at the neck and waist.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments.
  • Can lift boxes and drawings not exceeding 50 pounds.

  • Often performs routine work, frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another), repeatedly working within time constraints while maintaining attentiveness and intensity.
