Job Summary :

The College of Arts at UFV is a dynamic and inclusive community of students, faculty members, and staff who share a passion for learning and for making a difference in the world.

Home to the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences, the College counts more than 130 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, and approximately 145 active sessional and limited-term instructors.

We serve over 3,000 students each year in classes?offered in person on the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses, and online.

The Associate Dean for the Social Sciences will provide leadership and direction for the attainment of UFV Plans in collaboration with members of the Provost & Vice-President, Academic, team and other university leaders, including members of the Vice-President, Students Division.

They will work with the members of the Dean’s office to advance the goals and strategic priorities of the College, and will provide dedicated support to the departments and schools in the Faculty of Social Sciences, cultivating effective leadership amongst heads and directors.

They will advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of responsibilities. Within the Faculty of Social Sciences, they will play a key role in supporting students’ success and faculty members in their use of effective pedagogy.

They will guide the creation and revision of curriculum that is current and aligned with best practices of Decolonization, Indigenization, Reconciliation, and Internationalization.

They will support faculty in the attainment of their professional goals as educators, scholars, and academic citizens. They will promote clear communication and proactive conflict resolution, and will engage in labour relations in a respectful and solution-oriented manner.

The Associate Dean :

  • Plans, develops and facilitates the attainment of UFV Plans, in particular the Integrated Strategic Plan and the Strategic Enrolment Management Plan;
  • Facilitates the attainment of the College Vision, Mission and Goals;
  • Supports heads and directors on operational matters and mentors for effective leadership;
  • Infuses Indigenization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, leads by example, valuing differing perspectives and backgrounds and promoting equity and respect in a diverse work environment;
  • Promotes students’ success through a developmental approach and fair application of relevant policies and procedures, upholding the values of academic integrity;
  • Works with faculty members and related university areas to manage and resolve student-related issues
  • Guides curriculum design and delivery that provides meaningful learning experiences for students and that meets quality standards;
  • Initiates professional development opportunities for faculty to ensure high quality teaching practices are consistently deployed across the Faculty;
  • Facilitates the implementation of goals related to Indigenization and Internationalization of the curriculum, including through professional development of self and others;
  • Supports faculty with sabbatical leaves, research and scholarly activity releases, and professional development;
  • Provides leadership and oversight in recruitment, selection, hiring and orientation of new faculty, in alignment with the College of Arts’ priorities;
  • Administers review of faculty performance, promotion and tenure; recognizes and promotes faculty successes in teaching, research, service and leadership;
  • Supports heads and directors in mentoring and conducting performance reviews of sessional instructors;
  • Recommends appointments of Adjunct, Visiting and Emeritus faculty members;
  • Advises heads and directors on student-centered timetabling practices and work allocation in alignment with the Collective Agreement;
  • approves faculty workload;
  • Works in collaboration with the Dean and UFV International to facilitate partnerships with international partner institutions, including exchange opportunities for faculty and students;
  • Invites and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity and respect;
  • Addresses labour relations issues fairly and constructively, in liaison with the Dean and Human Resources;
  • Assists with conflict resolution in units and with students; and Models faculty growth by actively engaging in professional development.
  • Participate in or chair committees and working groups, as assigned by the Dean.

Qualifications :

  • A minimum of seven years of related experience at the post-secondary.
  • Distinguished achievement in the discipline and / or scholarship on teaching practice.
  • Substantial leadership contributions in service.
  • A high level of personal and professional integrity, a strong sense of ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
  • An ability to establish priorities and achieve objectives.
  • Experience in handling conflict effectively.
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Collaborative leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication and the ability to lead group discussions.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation.
  • Analytical reasoning skills for analysis of data and information for the purposes of making sound decisions.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, academic governance.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and being as reflected in one’s practice.
  • Thorough understanding of internationalization in post-secondary education.
  • Experience with labour relations and, preferably, knowledge of the UFV Collective Agreement.
  • Create and implement plans - shape, align and execute the strategic priorities to meet student and community needs.
  • Lead change Remain flexible, adjusting to changing circumstances and lead positive change by balancing innovation and calculated risk taking.
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships Build effective working relationships internally and externally and collaborate to achieve mutually beneficial goals.
  • Inspire and develop talent - Invest in developing yourself, staff and faculty, effective teams, and our culture of excellence.
  • Make effective decisions - Make sound and timely decisions that benefit UFV in both straightforward and ambiguous circumstance.
  • Infuse Indigenization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead by example, valuing differing perspectives and backgrounds and promote equity, inclusion, and respect in a diverse environment.
