Job description

School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 285 students.

Job Description and Requirements :

We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate a proficient understanding of the renewed BC curriculum, the new K-12 reporting policy, and School District 8, Kootenay Lake’s 2024 – 2029 Strategic Plan. The awarded applicant will be experienced in teaching in a multi-aged setting, fluent in assessment strategies that support learning, universal design for learning, technology integration and will strive to create an engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environment working with the Math and Physical Education and Health curricular expectations. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching in a middle and secondary school setting. We invite you to join our dynamic and collaborative school team committed to meeting the academic, social / emotional and deeper learning needs of a diverse student body in our rural school setting.

Position Description :

The awarded applicant will teach Math 9, PE 9 / 10, Fitness and Conditioning 11 / 12, and ORCA (Outdoor Education and Culinary Arts)

Educational Qualifications :

  • A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch
  • Bachelor of Teacher Education with a major / minor specialization in Math or Science and major / minor in Physical Education
  • Applicants will also be considered with a Bachelor of Education (secondary) with a major / minor specialization in :

1. in any physical and / or outdoor education area of focus OR

2. Foods studies curriculum, or relevant area of ADST

  • Current certification in Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or equivalent), with Wilderness First Aid or equivalent certification considered a strong asset for Outdoor Education instruction.
  • Having experience working in the food industry is preferred if no major / minor specialization in ADST curriculum.
  • Current Food Safe certificate.
  • Recent successful experience teaching in a grade 7-12 setting.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Experience with a variety of learning management systems
  • Required Competencies and Experience :

    1. Plan, using backward design and differentiation strategies, for curriculum that meets the needs, interests and abilities of a diverse range of learners.

    2. Create a mutually respectful classroom culture that ensures student involvement and engagement in the learning process and enables each student an opportunity to achieve learning outcomes through a variety of current instructional and self-regulation strategies.

    3. Collaborate with colleagues and the School Based Team, including the Learning Support Teacher, Aboriginal Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor to ensure that students with learning and behavioral challenges are supported through adaptations, modifications, and differentiation as required in their IEPs

    4. Establish clear learning outcomes or key questions related to big ideas in the new curriculum for units and projects and clearly communicate these outcomes to students and parents.

    5. Develop assessment and evaluation strategies that align with the changed emphases in curriculum.

    6. Be conversant and have experience with current educational technologies and demonstrate a growth mindset for learning new tools and applications.

    7. Be cognizant of Indigenous worldviews and knowledge and establish positive, interdependent relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every student’s unique abilities.

    8. Demonstrated ability to teach Math 9 using instructional approaches that promote conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and real-world application, while supporting diverse learner needs through effective scaffolding and assessment practices.

    9. Familiarity with the Physical and Health Education curriculum including a readiness to create meaningful and engaging cross curricular learning experiences relevant for secondary school aged learners, this includes the development of a new mini-academy style course, ORCA, that includes Outdoor Education and Culinary Arts.

    10. Engage in ongoing professional learning and reflective practice aligned with both the school’s goals and individual professional growth objectives.
